A long-term precipitation record is typically required for establishing the reliable water resources plan in the watershed. However, the observations in the hourly precipitation data are not always consistent and there are missing values within the time series. This study aims to develop a hourly rainfall simulator for extending rainfall data, based on the well-known Neyman-Scott Rectangular Pulse Model (NSRPM). Moreover, this study further suggests a multisite hourly rainfall simulator to better reproduce areal rainfalls for the watershed. The proposed model was validated with a network of five weather stations in the Uee-stream watershed in Seoul. The proposed model appeared a reasonable result in terms of reproducing most of the statistics (i.e. mean, variance and lag-1 autocovariance) of the rainfall time series at various aggregation levels and the spatial coherence over the weather stations.

A novel design for a simple rectangular ring with open-ended monopole antenna wireless local area network (WLAN) applications is proposed in this article. The proposed antenna consists of an open-ended rectangular ring, an inverted L-strip, and a rectangular slit in the ground plane, and is fed by a 50 ${\Omega}$ microstrip feed-line. Prototypes of the proposed antenna were designed, fabricated, and tested. Experimental results show that the proposed antenna receives 2.3125-2.775 GHz and 4.8625-6.7125 GHz with a return loss less than -10 dB, covering the required bandwidths of the 2.4/5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN standards. Meanwhile, the 2D radiation patterns and 3D gain performance of the antenna in the operation bands were also observed and discussed.

Both 1-D and 2-D analytic methods are used for a rectangular fin optimization. Optimum heat loss is taken as 98% of the maximum heat loss. Temperature profile using 2-D analytic method and relative error of temperature along the fin length between 1-D and 2-D analytic methods are presented. Increasing rate of the optimum heat loss with the variation of Biot number and decreasing rate of that with the variation of the fin base length are listed. Optimum fin tip length using 2-D analytic method and relative error of that between 1-D and 2-D analytic methods are presented as a function of Biot numbers ratio.

The stability and resistance of the plates under in-plane loading is crucial in the design of structures. For the assessment of structural stability, it is necessarily required to have accurate finite element technologies. Therefore, the enhanced 9-node plate (Q9-ANS) element is introduced for the linear buckling analysis of plate where the critical buckling load has to be determined. The Q9-ANS is developed with the Reissner-Mindlin (RM) assumptions which consider transverse shear deformation of the plate. Assumed shear strain is used to alleviate the shear locking phenomenon. Numerical examples are carried out to verify the performance of the Q9-ANS element in calculation of critical buckling load of the plates.

The isothermal characteristics of a rectangular parallelepiped sodium heat pipe were investigated for high-temperature applications. The heat pipes was made of stainless steel of which the dimension was $140\;m\;(L)\;{\times}\;95m\;(W)\;{\times}\;46 m\;(H)$ and the thickness of the container was 5 mm. Both inner surfaces of evaporator and condenser were covered with screen meshes to help spread the liquid state working fluid. To provide additional path for the working fluid, a lattice structure covered with screen mesh wick was inserted in the heat pipe. The bottom surface of the heat pipe was heated by an electric heater and the top surface was cooled by circulating coolant. The concern in this study was to enhance the temperature uniformity at the bottom surface of the heat pipe while an uneven heat source up to 900 W was in contact. The temperature distribution over the bottom surface was monitored at more than twenty six locations. It was found that the operating performance of the sodium heat pipe was critically affected by the inner wall temperature of the condenser region where the working fluid may be changed to a solid phase unless the temperature was higher than its melting point. The maximum temperature difference across the bottom surface was observed to be $114^{\circ}C$ for 850 W thermal load and $100^{\circ}C$ coolant inlet temperature. The effects of fill charge ratio, coolant inlet temperature and operating temperature on thermal performance of heat pipe were analyzed and discussed.

The effect of longitudinal thin rectangular riblets aligned with the flow direction on turbulent channel flow has been investigated using direct numerical simulation. The thin riblets have been modeled using the immersed boundary method (IBM) where the velocities at only one set of vertical nodes at the riblets positions are enforced to be zeros. Different spacings, ranging between 11 and 43 wall units, have been simulated aiming at getting the optimum spacing corresponding to the maximum drag reduction while keeping the height/spacing ratio at 0.5. Reynolds number based on the friction velocity ${\mu}_\tau$ and the channel half depth $\delta$ is set to 150. The flow is driven by adjusted pressure gradient so that the mass flow rate is kept constant in all the simulations. This study shows similar trend of the drag ratio to that of the experiments at the different spacings. Also, this research provides an optimum spacing of around 17 wall units leading to maximum drag reduction as experimental data. Explanation of drag increasing/decreasing mechanism is highlighted.

Natural images often contain useful information about the scene such as text or company logos placed on a rectangular shaped plane. The 2D images captured from such objects by a camera are often distorted, because of the effects of the perspective projection camera model. This distortion makes the acquisition of the text information difficult. In this study, we detect the rectangular object on which the text is written, then the image is restored by removing the perspective distortion. The Hough transform is used to detect the boundary lines of the rectangular object and a bilinear transformation is applied to restore the original image.

An end-launched adapter combining a coaxial loop within a rectangular waveguide has been analyzed and designed. The accurate electromagnetic modeling of input impedance for the adapter design has been developed using a modal analysis method. Also, design parameters to improve the end-launched adapter have been investigated. Numerical and experimental results of the proposed model have been compared with the results of previous works, and verified by an electromagnetic simulator of High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). The input voltage standing wave ratios (VSWRs) are smaller than 2 over the wide frequency band from 7.5 GHz to 10.5 GHz.

Corner flow, driven by differential heating at the vertical walls in a rectangular cavity, is studied. The flow is initiated from a strong vertical stratification of a Boussinesq fluid. The system Rayleigh number is large and the Prandtl number is O(1). Previous studies point to a considerable thickening of the boundary layer depth, which is referred to as the comer jet when the fluid moves vertically in and horizontally out near the comer. Some authors argue that the phenomenon is caused by an internal hydraulic jump. In some other investigations, the comer jet structure is shown to arise due to the temperature undershoots in the vertical boundary layer, which stem from the stable thermal stratification in the core. In this paper, the above controversy is resolved in part and a theoretical model for the comer flow is given. Furthermore, efforts are made to establish the condition for a smooth turning flow, without abrupt changes of the flow depth near the corner.

Based on an experimental study, this study provides an equation to describe the shear strength of high-strength concrete deep beams with rectangular openings and without web reinforcements. Twenty-four concrete deep beams were tested with the variables of concrete strength, size of web opening, and shear span-to-depth ratio. The proposed equation is expressed as the sum of the shear strength provided by longitudinal bars and concrete. It is illustrated that the proposed equation predicts the load-carrying capacity of the deep beams more properly than the experimental equations proposed by other researchers.

This paper presents a hybrid control algorithm for the active noise control in the rectangular enclosure using an active/passive foam actuator. The hybrid control composes of the adaptive feedforward with feedback loop in which the adaptive feedforward control uses the well-known filtered-x LMS(least mean square) algorithm and the feedback loop consists of the sliding mode controller and observer. The hybrid control has its robustness for both transient and persistent external disturbances and increases the convergence speed due to the reduced variance of the jiltered-x signal by adding the feedback loop. The sliding mode control (SMC) is used to incorporate insensitivity to parameter variations and rejection of disturbances and the observer is used to get the state information in the controller deign. An active/passive smart foam actuator is used to minimize noise actively using an embedded PVDF film driven by an electrical input and passively using an absorption-foam. The error path dynamics is experimentally identified in the form of the auto-regressive and moving-average using the frequency domain identification technique. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the hybrid control and the feasibility of the smart foam actuator.

The present study proposes a modified temperature-dependent non-Newtonian viscosity model and investigates the flow characteristics and heat transfer enhancement of the viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluid in a 2:1 rectangular duct. The combined effects of temperature dependent viscosity, buoyancy, and secondary flow caused by the second normal stress difference are considered. Calculated Nusselt numbers by the modified temperature-dependent viscosity model give good agreement with the experimental results. The heat transfer enhancement of viscoelastic fluid in a rectangular duct is highly dependent on the secondary flow caused by the magnitude of second normal stress difference.

In the present study, the unsteady Hartmann flow of a dusty viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid under the influence of an exponentially decreasing pressure gradient is studied without neglecting the ion slip. The parallel plates are assumed to be porous and subjected to a uniform suction from above and injection from below. The fluid is acted upon by an external uniform magnetic field which is applied perpendicular to the plates. An analytical solution for the governing equations of motion is obtained to yield the velocity distributions for both the fluid and dust particles.

In this study, we modeled a ship or marine structure into a rectangular resistance body and tried to examine surrounding flow characteristics and pressure distributions behind the resistance body experimentally and investigated pressure characteristics by a 3-dimension numerical simulation. As a result, the reattachment point of the mainstream separated from the upper part and proceeding to the rear part was about x/H=6, but by the influence of the negative pressure area formed behind the resistance body and interference of the flow flowed in winding from left and right, the reattachment point of some flows was formed near x/H=1.33. The perpendicular velocity component behind x/H=0 varies in size with the recycle flow shapes formed from the influence of the resistance body, but generally it shows a negative distribution and there is a decreasing pattern as it goes to the down part. We verified the result of the calculation by comparing the velocity distribution of 3-dimension numerical simulation using a commercial software and the PIV(particle image velocimetry) measurements. In the numerical simulation results, the static pressure characteristic behind the resistance body was proportional to the inflow velocity, and the dynamic pressure shows a similar pattern with constant-velocity from the experiment.

Although high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets have the potential merit of producing ultra-high field (>25 T), they have been not easy to apply to Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) because of the difficulty of field homogeneity improvement. This paper presents a design technique of passive shimming for HTS magnets. Ferromagnetic shimming design code was developed though MALAB, which includes the optimization algorithm. The proper shim element size was determined by a simulation. This design technique was verified by a case study design of a 3-T HTS magnet. We succeed to improve field homogeneity of the magnet from 634 ppm to 6.39 ppm at 10-mm diameter sphere volume. Feasibility of passive shimming for all-HTS NMR magnet was confirmed by this result.

Engineering correlations are derived to estimate the friction factor and Nusselt number of rectangular helical flow in stacks-inconduit conductors (SICC). The SICCs are under current development at KFE (Korea Institute of Fusion Energy) towards the realization of HTS (high-temperature superconductor) fusion system. A copper band is helically wound around the outer wall of a rectangular bundle of stacked REBCO (rare-earth barium copper oxide) tapes, and the space between the bundle and the external jacket serves as a cooling channel for helium gas flow. Key geometric parameters are identified for the SICC structure, and threedimensional numerical analyses are performed with ANSYS FLUENT and real thermo-physical properties of materials and fluids at 20-30 K. The analysis domain consists of (1) the REBCO bundle, (2) the copper band, and (3) the helium gas flow. A special attention is paid to the role of helix angle of copper band (and helium flow), significantly affecting not only the hydraulic diameter and flow length of cooling channel, but also the flow pattern of cooling gas established by the centrifugal force in curved flow passage. The thermo-hydraulic data are simplified with the typical method of dimensional analysis, and it is successfully verified that the dimensionless friction factor and Nusselt number can be expressed in terms of well-known Dean number (composed of inertial, centrifugal, and viscous forces), in a similar way with the helical tube flow. The derived correlations are directly applicable to the ongoing design and manufacturing of SICC, and eventually to the development of forced-flow gas-cooled HTS magnets.

This paper investigates the effect of reinforced plate on the deflection of the rectangular plate, when the rectangular plate is reinforced with rectangular rigid body at the centroid of the plate. For two boundary conditions such as simple supported and clamped boundary This study derives deflection formula of reinforced plates with three kinds of the aspect ratio of a rectangular plate with respect to the elastic modulus ratio and the length ratio of rigid body using the least square method. The results are as follows: 1. As the elastic modulus ratio r$_{e}$$\geq$ 1000, the maximum deflection with respect to the length ratio r$_{1}$ converges into constant value. 2. Deflection formula with respect to the length ratio r$_{1}$ is derived as the third order polynomial.l.

Stroke patients should exercise for the rehabilitation of their fingers, because they can't use their hand and fingers. The moving direction of thumb of five fingers is different that of four fingers (force finger, middle finger, ring finger, little finger). The thumb rehabilitation robot for rehabilitation exercise must be included a force control system, because robot can injure thumb by applying too much force. In this paper, the rectangular-type thumb rehabilitation robot was developed for stroke patient's thumb rehabilitation exercise of the flexibility rehabilitation exercise. The characteristic test of the developed rectangular-type thumb rehabilitation robot was carried out with normal men in their twenties. As a result, it is thought that the robot can be used for the flexibility rehabilitation exercise of stroke patient's thumb.
