This article aims to analyze the autobiographical records left by Chun Yun?hee, who came to Hawaii in 1915 as a Korean picture bride, through the lenses of gender, family, labor, and entrepreneurship. First, this article examines the motivations and causes for her transcountry mobility during Korea's Japanese colonial era and subsequent local?level relocations within the Hawaiian Islands. Second, it sheds light on her labor and economic activities in the period after her migration to the United States, particularly focusing on her involvement in Hawaii's lodging business. It examines why and how she entered and operated lodging businesses, specifically in terms of capital, labor, and customers; how gender and geographical conditions affected her entrepreneurial activities; and how she interpreted the meaning of her work. It is expected that this study will contribute to an improved understanding of not only immigrant women entrepreneurs in general but also the economic adaptation processes and the role of social networks among Korean picture brides in particular.

Ethnic autobiography diverges from traditional notions of American autobiographies by re-interpreting the singular ‘I’ in autobiographies. The speaking subject is no more a confident and firm individual, a successful representation of a prosperous American society. Rather, it shows the complexity and elaborateness of defining oneself in an ethnic context, as it requires the subject to be placed in multiple historical, cultural, economic, and ethnic discourses and circumstances. Just as ethnic autobiography resists unified evaluation of ethnic selves, it is important to note that Picture Bride possesses greater significance than as a mere family poem or a poem about various images of Asian American women. Rather than solely dealing with traditional or radical images of Asian American women, this poem collection places its subjects in multiple historical, cultural, economic, and ethnic discourses and contexts. By presenting collective yet conflicting voices of Asian American women, their conflicts regarding their ethnicity, and irreconcilable images and themes, Picture Bride illustrates the ongoing process of self-formation and representation through its speakers and narrative structures, and presents the complexity and elaborateness in defining oneself in an ethnic context. Analyzing Song’s Picture Bride as an ethnic autobiography enables her work to be interpreted on a broader perspective, allowing us to delineate a clearer map of her poems as an Asian American poetry and to appreciate its significance as well as prominence in the fields of Asian American literature.

The 1982 winner of the Yale Series of Younger Poets, Cathy Song’s Picture Bride is located in the period of the avalanche of feminist writings by Asian American women writers. While a traditional ideal of femininity for Asian Americans has restrained women’s articulation of their own identities, Song recognizes that the relationship between feminism and ethnicity is not that of choosing one while discarding the other. Rather, through her writings, the poet embraces the heritage of her ancestors, believing that claiming her identity as an Asian American woman is inseparable from constructing her ethnic identity. Placing herself as a register of the history of her family as well as of Asian Americans at large, Song holds a “ritual of remembrance” to disclose and comfort the hidden subjects of history. Focusing on her best-known work, Picture Bride, this paper is going to examine the way in which Song unfolds a story restrained by major historiographies.

Historical research on international marriage within the Korean American community predominantly addresses women who married American soldiers stationed in South Korea during the 1950s and subsequently emigrated to the United States. However, this study shifts the focus to analyzing cases of international marriage among Korean Americans during the period surrounding World War II. The outbreak of World War II and subsequent postwar occupation policies prompted Korean Americans to pursue a new form of marriage labeled “co-ethnic international marriage.” Asian Americans, including Korean Americans who served in the U.S. military, moved from the U.S. mainland or Hawaii to various locations across Asia, following the military front lines and occupied territories, where they encountered and married Asian women. Women who departed Korea through marriage to Korean American men during the U.S. military occupation era are considered pioneers of the Korean American community, embodying the legacy of the “picture brides,” a practice that had ceased after 1924. Simultaneously, they represent the “first-generation war brides,” who laid the groundwork for Korean immigration to the United States in the 1950s. These women adopted the picture brides’ initial survival and adaptation strategies. Before the arrival of war brides in the 1950s, they were already learning to adapt to foreign languages and cultures while striving to preserve and transmit Korean culture. These women, embodying both the characteristics of picture brides and war brides, are essential figures in the historical narrative of Korean American immigration.

Immigrant Literature is basically literature of transgression, renunciation, and of importation. Words like immigrant, migrant, migration, and immigration have been broadly used to describe the fluid movement of peoples across national borders for a variety of reasons. This essay revisits some poems on ‘Angel Island’ and ‘Picture Bride’ and invites readers to rethink the identity politics of immigrant literature. At once problematizing the ways of defining identity in terms of language, ethnicity, and nation, this essay reconstructs the history of early Korean American immigrant literature and questions how to rewrite the personal and public history of immigration through the ways of testimony. Debunking the common myth of immigration literature: that immigration literature is represented by its success story, I try to tackle the problems that recent immigrant literature has presented to the mapping of Korean and American literary and cultural space. Looking beyond the boundary of language and nation, revitalizing the erased time and place in the history of Asian American diaspora literature, I will cast light upon the hidden voices of Korean immigrants in the early 20th century. Through the poems written in Korean and English by the first and third generations of Korean immigrants in San Francisco and Hawaii, it will be noted how poetic language can be re-posited as the alternative space of history and culture in the form of remembrance and testimony.

Kim Mal-bong’s novel Songs to the Wave was published for 17 consecutive episodes in the magazine Hope, which was published from July 1951. The novel, which tells the story of a Hawaiian labor immigrant and a ‘picture bride’ during the colonial period, serves as a prehistorical story of Kim Mal-bong’s 1950s novel known as anti-communism pro-Americanism. Like Kim Mal-bong, well-known as a popular novel writer, the novel’s big frame deals with a beautiful and innocent biography of the woman. The novel consists of a melodrama and an epic story in which her husband is endangered by Hawaiian natives and evil Joseon men, and while overcoming it, they creates a healthy family. Bong-geum is a Joseon woman who bravely solves problems despite the rape crisis and keeps her integrity despite the temptation of her first love. Kim Mal-bong shows that immigration to Hawaii is in a necropolitical situation. Kim Young-seop, a labor immigrant, eventually becomes disabled in an accident after suffering from severe labor, and women who come as picture brides are traded and sold in money. It is the true heart of Bong-geum and Young-seop that can overcome this situation. In contrast, people who indulge in gambling and sex are presented. They are punished for death in the novel. But what’s interesting about this novel is the way it reproduces Hawaii, or the United States. Kim Mal-bong sets Hawaii as a contact zone. Those who threaten the protagonist are the natives of Hawaii, and few white people appear in the novel. Only when Cho Young-kyu moves to the States, a “real American” appears. Good people help Cho Young-kyu with his studies and actively express their affection for him. In addition, Bong-geum’s good son Seong-ju moves to Los Angeles with his Japanese girlfriend. These settings illustrate the situation in South Korea, the United States, and Japan in the 1950s. In the order of East Asia created by the U.S., South Korea and Japan must reconcile in past enemies, and cooperate with the U.S. like Annie and Young-kyu.

In the context of gender geography and mobility discourse, the purpose of this study is to reveal the narrative representation method of the Hawaiian Picture Bride who emerged in modern colonial Joseon in the early 20th century. In response, this paper examines various genres such as novels, plays, poems, fairy tales, and oral statements, as well as literary texts based on photographic marriages and Picture Brides that exist over a wide range of periods from 1920s to 2020, and then reconstruct the actual truth of photographic marriage and genealogy of the Picture Bride's representation method, and analyzed the dynamic creation process of migrant women in the 21st-century Picture Bride's narrative. In the Picture Bride's narrative, female characters create survival strategies in the home and reorganize their positions through subjective choices while accepting complex differences in cultures and norms on a multi-layered scale while forming a neighbor-dependent network. Through this, Hawaii acquires the meaning of another home for Picture Brides and a paradoxical place as a diaspora space. In this way, in the context of trans migration, the Picture Bride can be reinterpreted as an active 'actor' who connects local and local beyond transnational discourse, negotiates one's identity, and creates a new place. This method of existence of the Picture Bride needs to be meaningfully reconsidered in that it raises the origin and possibility of the Korean female diaspora in the multicultural landscape where the feminization of migration in the 21st century is accelerating.
