In this study, we analyzed the structural limitations of commercial LLM-based security detection systems designed to counter the growing Prompt Injection threats driven by the widespread use of Large Language Model (LLM) services. Because traditional detection methods based on static keywords and regular expressions are vulnerable to context-dependent attacks—such as obfuscation, role disguise, and indirect instructions—commercial LLM-based detection methods that can understand semantic context have recently been utilized as a great alternative. However, the Safety Guardrails of commercial APIs can block high-risk malicious payloads even before the model’s inference stage. This causes a phenomenon called ‘Guardrail Interference,’ where the detector is prevented from actually analyzing the attack. In an experiment involving 100 cases using the Gemini API, the static keyword-based detector recorded an accuracy of 71%, while the LLM-based detector only achieved 55%. Furthermore, 38 of those cases were blocked right at the API level, meaning no proper semantic analysis results were returned at all. This tells us that the very safety mechanisms built to protect general users can actually act as a ‘black box’ obstacle in an AI Security monitoring environment. Therefore, a fail-safe design that relies solely on the API’s blocked status has its clear limitations. To overcome this, we need to introduce open-source LLMs that allow us to control security policies, along with independent detection paths.
