To make an accurate estimation of PMI (Post Mortem Interval) based on the necrophagous fly larvae collected from human cadavers, biological data on the flies inhabiting the local area are demanded. In this study, growth time, BT (based temperature) and ADH (accumulated degree hours) of Lucilia sericata collected in Busan were studied to obtain basic data for estimation of PMI. As the results, growing time from eggs to adults was 317 hrs, 290 hrs, and 252 hrs in average at 25 ℃, 27℃ and 30℃ respectively, indicating that the higher the temperature, the shorter the growing time. The final length of the larvae in average was 16.1㎝ in 108hrs at 25℃, 15.8㎝ in 96hrs at 27℃, and 13.6㎝ in 84hrs at 30℃, suggesting that the lower the breeding temperature, the longer the length of pupaeing larvae. The value of BT and ADH adopting the growth rate and growth time of L. sericata and the breeding temperature were calculated 9°C and 6483 in average respectively. These results will be useful for the estimation of PMI of cadavers occurred in Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do province.

원문보기

Background: 2-Ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) is widely used as a flame-retardant plasticizer in the production of polyvinyl chloride, adhesives, and food packaging. This chemical has been frequently detected in water, sediment, and indoor environments, and its lipophilicity raises concerns about bioaccumulation. Objectives: In this study, the effects of EHDPP on the development, behavioral changes, and growth hormone (GH) endocrine system of zebrafish larvae were investigated. Methods: Fertilized embryos were exposed to various concentrations (control, solvent control, 0.07, 0.7, 7, 70, and 700 ㎍/L) of EHDPP for 96 h. Developmental toxicity endpoints were observed daily. Behavioral changes under light-dark-light conditions and changes in hormones and genes related to GH/insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) axis were determined. Results: Significant decreases in survival, body length and moving distance were observed in zebrafish larvae exposed to 70 and 700 ㎍/L EHDPP. The concentrations of GH and IGF-1 were significantly decreased in zebrafish larvae exposed to 70 and 700 ㎍/L EHDPP. This change was well supported by changes in the transcription of genes involved in GH, IGF, IGF receptors, and IGF binding proteins. Conclusions: Our observations showed that exposure to 70 and 700 ㎍/L EHDPP could disrupt the feedback circuits of the GH/IGFs axis, ultimately leading to developmental toxicity, hypoactivity, and mortality.

원문보기

We observed the osteological development of larval and juvenile red spotted grouper (Epinephelus akaara) in order to generate data for the assessment of skeletal deformities and to inform phylogenetic systematics research. Larvae and juveniles were obtained from a aquafarm in Muan-gun, Jeolla-namdo Province, Korea. The average water temperature at the time of breeding was $23.0^{\circ}C$ and average water salinity was 33.0 psu. Freshly hatched fish larvae had not undergone any ossification, but ossification of the parasphenoid bone, which forms the base of the cranium, occurred as the juveniles reached an average body length (BL) of 2.49 mm. At the same time, ossification of the preopercle and opercle occurred in the operculum, and ossification of the maxilla, which forms the upper jaw, and the dentary bones, which form the lower jaw, began. In addition, ossification of the vertebra occurred by formation of 7 vertebral centra and the neural spine in the abdominal vertebra. When the juveniles reached an average (BL) of 5.22 mm, ossification of the nasal, lateral ethmoid, and alisphenoid bones occurred in the cranium; ossification of the endopterygoid and metapterygoid bones began in the palatine region; and ossification of the hypohyal and interhyal bones occurred in the hyoid arch. At an average (BL) of 20.9 mm, ossification of the basisphenoid bone in the cranium and the suborbital bone in the orbital region occurred. Ossification of the vertebra then occurred by the formation of long pairs of ribs from the third to the ninth abdominal vertebrae, completing osteological development.

원문보기

The Eurytoma maslovskii conduces the unexpected plum dropping. It stayed overwinter insidethe pits of the dropped plums and able to oviposit on plum surface when the diameter of theplums are over 16 mm prior to endocarp hardening. To control this harmful pests is too muchessential to plum orchard. Therefore, the plum seed crusher (PSC) was designed and developedaccording to the purpose of perishing the pests through destroying the dropped plums. The rocksand the weeds were removed from the plum orchard prior to the test. Manually operated plumseed crusher picked-up the dropped plums from the ground and crushed them. The performanceof PSC was evaluated by applying 2.5 and 3.0 km/h travelling speeds, and controlling the gaps;18, and 28 mm intervals between plum pick-up discs. The test result showed the plum pick-uprate was 98±2.0%, and 92±5.3% with the machine travelling speed of 3.0 km/h in laboratory. Further, it changed to 95±8.7%, and 93±5.8% when the travelling speed was used 2.5 km/h. Inboth cases of test plum pick-up discs were maintained 18 mm, and 28 mm gap intervals, respectively. Furthermore, in field conditions, pursuing to similar gap intervals, the plum pick-uprate was 94±4.0%, and 92±2.0% with the speed of 3.0 km/h albeit it showed 92±4.0%, and90±3.5% when the speed was decreased to 2.5 km/h. The maximum plum pick-up rate wasfound at 18 mm disc intervals with 3.0 km/h travelling speeds. The crushing teeth were selected8 mm in height by repeated test to destroy the plum seeds. The result showed 100% crushingefficiency was facilitated to entire tests at 280 RPM crushing speeds regardless of plum sizesand shapes. This machine is preferred for the farmers to control the damage of plums bypreventing the propagation of the identified pests.

Insects possess biological defense systems that can effectively combat the invasion of external microorganisms and viruses, thereby supporting their survival in diverse environments. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) represent a fast-acting weapon against invading pathogens, including various bacterial or fungal strains. A 37-residue antimicrobial peptide, papiliocin, derived from the swallowtail butterfly Papilio xuthus larvae, showed significant antimicrobial activities against several human pathogenic bacterial and fungal strains. Jelleines, isolated as novel antibacterial peptides from the Royal Jelly (RJ) of bees, exhibit broad-spectrum protection against microbial infections. In this study, we developed a novel antimicrobial peptide, PAJE (RWKIFKKPFKISIHL-NH2), which is a hybrid peptide prepared by combining 1-7 amino acid residues (RWKIFKK-NH2) of papiliocin and 1-8 amino acid residues (PFKISIHL-NH2) of Jelleine-1 to alter length, charge distribution, net charge, volume, amphipaticity, and improve bacterial membrane interactions. This novel peptide exhibited increased hydrophobicity and net positive charge for binding effectively to the negatively charged membrane. PAJE demonstrated antimicrobial activity against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, with very low toxicity to eukaryotic cells and an inexpensive process of synthesis. Collectively, these findings suggest that this novel peptide possesses great potential as an antimicrobial agent.

The effects of in vitro culture methods on morphological development and infectivity of Strongyloides venezuelensis filariform larvae ($L_3$) to rats were investigated. A significantly higher body length was observed in $L_3$ from filter paper culture ($597.3{\pm}32.2{\mu}{m}$) than those in fecal (($509.9{\pm}35.0{\mu}m$) and nutrient broth culture (503.3{\pm}31.0{\mu}{m}}) (P<0.05). Larval infectivity was assessed by exposing rats to 1,000 $L_3$ from each culture and worms were recovered from the lungs and small intestines. Recovery rate of these worms did not show any significant difference. A significantly greater body length of adults was recorded in those corresponding to the $L_3$ harvested from filter paper ($2,777.5{\pm}204.4{\mu}{m}$) and nutrient broth culture (($2.732.5{\;}{\pm}{\;}169.8{\;}{\mu}{m}$) than those corresponding to the $L_3$ obtained from fecal culture (($2.600.5{\pm}172.4{\mu}{m}$) (P<0.05). Although worm fecundity and EPG counts differed among culture methods but worm burdens and course of infection did not. These findings suggest that the methods of cultures have a significant effect on the morphological development of the larvae to the $L_3$ stage, but do not influence the infectivity to rats.

Development and distribution of larval Dungeness crab, Cancer magister Dana, 1852 were investigated in southeastern Alaska from late May to mid-September in 2004. Larvae were collected during daylight hours at three inner and two outer Glacier Bay stations at the two different depths in the water column, above and below the thermocline. Larval density decreased dramatically for three larval stages, zoeae I(ZI), zoeae IV, and zoeae V(ZV), but relatively little for zoeae II and zoeae III. ZI predominated at all stations in late May and were collected until late July. Larval stages progressed seasonally from ZI to ZV and density decreased from ZI through ZV. The densities of each zoeal stage at the inner and outer bay stations and at the shallow and deep depths were similar. The density of each larval stage above(shallow) and below(deep) the thermocline and between inner and outer bay stations were not significantly different. The occurrence of larval Dungeness crab is dramatically later than in other parts of the species range, in that larvae appear in abundance beginning in late May. The pattern of spatial distribution of larval stages for the inland waters of Alaska was also markedly different than the patterns reported for Dungeness crab larvae from other parts of the species range, in that the early and intermediate stages occurred within inland waters; from British Columbia to California these larval stages increase in abundance with distance offshore.
