이 글은 1910~20년대 세책 관련기록과 실제 유통되었던 세책 구활자본 고소설을 통해, 이와 관련된 몇 가지 문제를 살펴본 글이다. 먼저 살펴본 것은 1910년대 이후에도 세책점이 존재했고 영업했다는 점이다. 그동안 세책은 모리스 쿠랑과 최남선의 기록을 통해 1890년에서 1910년경에 사라진 것으로 알려졌다. 그러나 관련 자료를 통해 1910년대 이후에도 세책점이 존재했고, 영업했었음을 확인할 수 있었다.다음 살펴본 것은 장서각에 소장된 세책 구활자본 고소설들이다. 이 자료들은 구활자본 고소설이 간행되자마자 바로 세책으로 유통되던 것들이다. 이를 통해 1910년대 세책점에서는 구활자본 고소설의 간행과 동시에 이를 대본(貸本)으로 수용했음을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 살펴본 것은 이전 시기의 세책과 구활자본 고소설의 대조를 통한 두 본의 관계였다. 팔장사전(八壯士傳)과 소대성전(蘇大成傳)을 살펴본 결과 구활자본 고소설은 먼저 존재했던 세책을 저본(底本)으로 형성되었음을 알 수 있었다. 이를 통해 구활자본 고소설의 원천 중 하나는 세책이란 사실을 재확인할 수 있었다. 이 논문에서는 이런 사실들을 차례로 다루었다.

The present study examined the historical records of the Rental Library Manuscripts and their old printed books for rent actually circulated in the 1910-20's. Most researchers regard circulating libraries as being introduced and popular since the 18th century but as gone in the early 20th century due to other attractions such as the new-style fiction, series novels on newspapers, old printed novels, etc. However, the historical records about the Rental Library Manuscripts and the copies which had been rent out by circulating libraries indicate that circulating libraries had continued to exist beyond 1900's. It was also known that the copies possessed by circulating libraries were largely old printed books. These two findings establish the importance of circulating old printed books and rental library manuscripts at that time. The present study provides a detailed examination about this point.
