Background: Liver has a strong ability of regeneration after hepatic injury or resection. It has been reported that lots of factors such as HGF, EGF, TGF, IL-1, IL-6, and TNF- participate α in liver regeneration.1-4) However, the mechanism is not fully understood. To understand liver regeneration process, we compared the gene expression involved in liver regeneration and development. In particular, we focused on heat shock proteins. Method: We used ICR mice and divided into 4 groups; fetus, adult mice operated hepatectomy, adult mice treated carbon tetrachloride, and normal adult mice. Gene expressions of 4 groups were analyzed by microarray. Western blotting was used for HSPs analyzing. Result and Conclusion: Based on microarray data, the expression of most HSP genes had no significant differences except HSP1A, HSP2, and HSP110. HSP1A expression levels were high in groups treated CCl4 and hepatectomy. HSP2 was highly expressed during regeneration after operated hepatectomy. In all cases, HSP110 was up-regulated. Through western blot, we confirmed that HSP60 increased during liver regeneration and decreased after regeneration. Our study suggests that some of the HSPs may have crucial roles in the liver regeneration.
