A lab-scaled (7 L of working volume) continuous autotrophic nitrification system has been operated for 1490 days feeding coke oven gas (COG) wastewater to study the treatability and monitor the long-term performance of the biological nitrification system. Incomplete nitrification occurred for the first 240 days. The periodic fluctuation of nitrite and nitrate observed from day 240 to day 1230. Finally, complete nitrification took place from day 1230. It was postulated that the high free ammonia (FA) concentration (35 mg/L) selectively inhibited nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB)1-2), and NOB slowly overcame the toxic effect of FA. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and the analysis of 16S rRNA gene clone library were carried out to investigate the diversity of bacteria in the system with DNA collected at day 1150. Nitrosomonas nitrosa-like ammonia oxidizing bacteria, was the most abundant bacterial group (53.8%) indicating successful enrichment of autotrophic nitrifiers with significant proportion of the entire bacterial community. Thiobacillus denitrificans responsible autotrophic thiocyanate degradation (33.7 % of total population) was also found. No nitrite oxidizing bacteria was found in spite of the detection of nitrate at day 1150.
