Neurotrophins are growth factors implicated in several different functions in the development and maintenance of nervous system.1) Mature neurotrophins are cleaved proteins that have potent effects on neuronal survival, differentiation and synaptic function, whereas proneurotrophins triggers cell death through interaction with p75NTR.2) Here we show that pro-nerve growth factor (NGF) and pro-brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) have different actions on noradrenergic progenitor cells. The p75NTR and a coreceptor, sortlin were expressed in noradrenergic progenitor cells. We found that pro-NGF had no significant influence on noradrenergic progenitor cell proliferation, differentiation or cell death, while pro-BDNF induced apoptotic cell death. The transcription factor NF-kB was activated by pro-NGF but not by pro-BDNF. These results suggest that there is a possible role of NF-kB pathway in response to different proneurotrophins.
