Objective : This paper describes the therapeutic application of a snoezelen(multisensory) room for children with profound mental retardation in the Republic of Korea and theoretical, and operational issues.
Methods : The subjects of this study were 2 profound mental retarded children. One was 11 aged. The other was 13 aged. Two single subject researches were proceeded. The baseline data was measured in the department of Occupational Therapy. The treatment data was measured in the snoezelen room. The results were presented by table, graph and visually analyzed.
Results : The self-stimulatory behaviors got smaller in the treatment phase than the baseline. There was decreasing tendency of the self-stimulatory behaviors that the treatment sessions continued.
Conclusion : This study showed the therapeutic effects of snoezelen room on the reduction of self-stimulatory behaviors in children with profound mental retardation.

목적 : 이 연구의 목적은 스노젤렌 공간이 중증도 정신지체 아동의 자기자극 행동에 미치는 영향과 스노젤렌 공간의 이론적 및 작동적 쟁점들을 기술하기 위한 것이다.
연구방법 : 연구대상자는 13세와 11세의 두 명의 중등도 정신지체 아동이었다. 두 개의 A-B 개별 실험 연구를 실시하였다. 기초선 자료는 작업치료실에서 치료선 자료는 스노젤렌 공간 안에서 30분 동안 연구대상자의 자기자극 행동의 빈도가 측정되었다. 결과 자료는 빈도수의 표와 그래프로 제시하였고 시각적으로 분석되었다.
결과 : 두 명의 연구대상자 각각에서 기초선 3회기, 치료선 7회기 동안 자기자극 행동의 빈도가 측정되었다. 기초선 보다 치료선에서 자기 자극 행동의 평균 빈도가 감소하였으며 치료 회기가 증가함에 따라 자기 자극 행동은 감소하는 경향을 보였다.
결론 : 이 연구는 스노젤렌 공간이 중증도 정신지체 아동의 자기 자극행동을 감소시키는 치료적 효과를 보여주었다.
