- The purpose of this study is to describe the location, form, and function of the Obong-ri, which is the same family village, and to explain the processes through which the characteristics of the village has been formed. The direct observations and interviews with the inhabitants of the village were undertaken to learn about the patterns and processes fo the village.
The clan village of the Obong-ri was developed through 500~600 years by Kangneung Ham's(江陵 咸氏), Kangneung Choi's(江陵 崔氏), and Yongkoong Kim's(龍宮 金氏) families.
This village is located on the southern hill-side slops of the basins which are surrounded by hills and mountains. The southern hill-side slops were chosen by the inhabitants, because it was protected from the cold winds blowing from the north-west during the winter.
The Obong-ri is the agglomerated settlement which the seventy five houses are clustered together by the sam e family groups. The clan families lived in the village closely together, because they helped each other.
The main function of the village is agriculture. The agriculture is the most important economic activity which composed of 81% of the occupation in the village.
Based on the floor-plan, the houses of the Obong-ri are classified into two major types: linear double row room house type and L-shaped double row room house type.
The influences that determine the location, form, function of the settlement, and the house type fall into three main factors: (1) the influence of natural conditions, (2) the influence of social-cultural conditions, and (3) the influence of the agricultural econlmy.
