The purpose of this study is planning a building exterior color based on the regional image of the
Cheong-Gye area. This research also testifies the usability of the Korea Environmental Color
Manual(KEC) through the survey. The results of this study are as follows.
At the Cheong-Gye area, it could be categorized as 6 fields, such as machinery and tools, electricity and lighting fixtures, textiles and subsidiary materials, video and bookstore, aquarium and pets, advertising and promotional materials. Image setting methods for The Cheong-Gye area related to the market categories and local characteristics are as follows ."dynamic", "modern", "casual", "natural", "traditional", "active" were selected based on the preceding researches. Color palettes were suggested for the building exterior color according to each categories of the Cheong-Gye area using the KEC.
The Chevrel's theories and IRI's color image scales were used to make color combinations.
There were inquiries to test whether the color image expression fitted to each category or not. As a result, it was found that suggested building exterior colors are successful for representing the image of each category. This study planned the building exterior color of the Cheong-Gye area which stands for the urban scenery of Korea, according to the environmental color planning process. It is meaningful that the easier method has been found for designer and the color planner to access to the color selection with the KEC.
