Users must decide their route under an information gap when the key facilities in large transfer stations are out of service, and detour guidance is not sufficiently provided. This study analyzed the route decision behavior and its associated factors in such situations. Using the general sample of 1,000 respondents from a stated preference survey conducted in July 2026 among adults residing in the Seoul metropolitan area, a scenario without detour guidance (S1) was linked to a scenario in which definite guidance was provided (S2). In S1, 22.0% of the respondents tried their most familiar existing route, and familiar-route adherence increased with age. In a binary logistic regression controlling for gender and usage frequency, the odds of adherence remained higher for ages 60–64 years(odds ratio [OR]=2.04) and 65 years and over (OR=2.10), and intuitive wayfinding propensity (OR=0.77) and familiar-route propensity (OR=1.38) remained significant after controlling for age. Among the adherents, 89.1% cited the familiar route as the safest option, whereas the distrust of guidance information accounted for only 3.6%. In S2, 58.6% of adherents (69.6% among those aged 65 and over) immediately accepted the guided detour, exceeding the 25.9% of non-adherents. This gap persisted after controlling for age and propensity (OR=3.53). Therefore, familiar-route adherents are not a group that declines to follow guidance once it is provided, but one that chooses the familiar route for its perceived safety when guidance is absent, which provides a basis for designing detour guidance systems in large transfer stations.
