Effects of Psychological Health Care on Quality of Life and Happiness : Focusing on the Mediating Effect of Healing of Companion Animals
Background: Modern people are exposed to ongoing stress and psychological anxiety amid rapidly changing social environments and fierce competition. Stress management plays an important role in quality of life and feelings of happiness. There is a need to study the therapeutic effects of emotional bonding with companion animals in managing modern people's stress, from the perspective of regular and sustainable emotional recovery and everyday psychological care. Objective: To empirically analyze the effects of effective health management of stress through interaction with companion animals on quality of life and perceived happiness, and to identify the mediating role of companion animal bonding therapy in stress management within that causal relationship. Methods: Survey data collected from 308 adults nationwide were analysed using IBM SPSS 29.0. Regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationships of psychological health care with quality of life and happiness, and the mediating effect of companion animal-assisted therapy was tested according to the procedure of Baron & Kenny (1986). In addition, the difference in stress indices between a separately constituted group of 100 pet owners and a group of 100 non-pet owners was analysed using an independent samples t-test. Results: All of the sub-factors of psychological health management were confirmed to have a statistically significant positive effect on an individual’s quality of life and sense of well-being, and the mediating role of pet-assisted therapy was significantly verified. The mean stress index of the pet-owning group (M=35.07) was 13.83 points lower than that of the non-pet-owning group (M=48.90), and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (p<.05). Conclusion: Through this study, it is suggested that bonding with pets is effective for stress management and functions as a powerful natural healing mechanism that enhances quality of life and well-being. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that stress management and enhancement through the introduction of a pet bonding program should be considered a practical strategy to improve the quality of life and well-being of modern people.
