A Forgery-Resistant Privacy-Preserving Biometric Authentication Protocol Based on Homomorphic Encryption
Biometric authentication protocols using homomorphic encryption have drawn attention as a privacy-preserving means, since a server can compute the authentication result without decrypting the encrypted biometric data. However, existing homomorphic encryption-based protocols typically let the client alone hold the secret key and decrypt the authentication result, allowing a malicious client to forge the result and pass authentication without a genuine biometric sample. This paper proposes a privacy-preserving biometric authentication protocol that combines homomorphic encryption with additive secret sharing and masking to address this limitation. The master secret key is split between the client and the server so that neither party can decrypt a ciphertext alone, and through an interactive process only the server obtains the final authentication result in plaintext. This resolves the problem of authentication result forgery by malicious clients in existing protocols. A cut-and-choose technique further embeds the true result with decoy values across random slots of the result ciphertext, letting the server detect tampering during interactive decryption, while a challenge nonce defends against replay attacks. Security analysis shows a malicious client's forgery success probability is bounded by 2/N with respect to the ring dimension N, and an implementation using a fingerprint dataset confirms the protocol's feasibility.
