Development and Application of an Inquiry Program Using Quantitative Analysis of a Deep-Ocean Circulation Model Experiment
The purpose of this study was to develop an inquiry program using quantitative analysis of a deep-ocean circulation model experiment and to examine the inquiry performance patterns of preservice science teachers. Four high school Earth Science textbooks based on the 2022 revised national science curriculum were analyzed, and quantification, relational interpretation, extension, and evaluation were established as development criteria for a 5E-based inquiry program. The program used video analysis software to generate three types of quantitative data—a time-depth graph, a contour map, and a plot profile—and required participants to compare and interpret them, explain relationships between the physical properties and movement of water masses, apply these relationships to deep-ocean circulation, and evaluate the explanatory scope and limitations of the model. The program was implemented with 21 preservice science teachers, and their worksheets were analyzed qualitatively through matrix-based within-case and cross-case comparisons. The results showed that participants transformed qualitatively observed water-mass movement into quantitative data, compared the data, and interpreted the results in relation to density differences caused by temperature and salinity. They also applied the identified relationships to actual ocean circulation and environmental change and examined the explanatory scope and limitations of the model. However, measurement values varied depending on judgments about measurement locations, and interpretations and predictions differed when the relationships were applied to new environmental conditions. Based on these findings, the study suggests clarifying measurement criteria, examining data reliability, and providing opportunities for learners to check their explanations and predictions against previously generated data during the evaluation phase.
