Effects of Application Sequences of Wood Preservative and Dancheong for Wooden Architectural Heritage on the Degradation Stability of Dancheong
This study investigated the optimal sequence of applying a wood preservative application to enhance the color stability of Dancheong layer. Three application sequences were evaluated for the experiment: Group A (preservative → Dancheong), Group B (Dancheong → preservative), and Group C (preservative → Dancheong → preservative). To assess durability of the Dancheong coating, three weathering tests were performed: light (UV) degradation, freeze–thaw degradation, and outdoor exposure. After these tests, the color stability of the Dancheong coating was evaluated through flatbed scanner, stereo microscope, color difference measurements, and coating adhesion assessment. Results indicated that applying the preservative both before and after Dancheong (Group C) provided greater color stability than the conventional method (Group B). Adhesion tests revealed that preservative-treated Seokganju and Neorok samples exhibited decreased coating adhesion during the early stages of weathering; however, by the end of the weathering period, the differences in adhesion between the treated and control samples were minimal. Based on these results, Group C is recommended for further consideration as a practical conservation strategy.
