Despite the increasing prevalence of online tests in the past decade, only a limited number of studies have explored their impact. In order to fill this gap, a study was conducted using a regression discontinuity design to investigate the transition from a paper-based test to an online-based Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC®). Students in high schools and universities take this test for the further advancement of their English proficiency and for placement purposes; thus, the ramifications of the test’s outcomes have been large. The sample size for the research was 2,019 participants, which was the case during the end of their second year of college. The participants took the test over a four-year period from 2019 to 2022. While paper-based format was used in the first two years, online-based format was used in the last two years, with there being a cutoff point between 2020 and 2021. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis to examine the overall score trends. The results revealed that the two test formats differed considerably and produced contrasting outcomes. These findings highlight the need for caution when interpreting scores from different test formats, and suggest several avenues for future research.
