The increasing integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in language education has transformed how written feedback is delivered in EFL writing classrooms. While previous studies have examined linguistic outcomes and revision quality, less attention has been paid to learners’ affective engagement with AI-generated feedback over time. This study investigates how EFL students’ emotional responses to ChatGPT-generated feedback evolve across three genre-specific paragraph-writing tasks. Adopting a 16-week longitudinal qualitative design, the study involved 36 undergraduate EFL students enrolled in Paragraph Writing course. Students engaged with ChatGPT feedback while revising three genres: comparison–contrast, cause–effect, and argumentative paragraphs. Data were collected through 108 reflective journal entries and analysed using thematic analysis. In addition, students writing artifacts provided contextual evidence of students’ responses to feedback. The findings suggest that students’ affective engagement developed progressively from initial confusion, frustration, and uncertainty toward motivation, confidence, and greater autonomy. The results also indicate that emotional engagement fluctuated in response to cognitive and rhetorical demands. Teacher mediation played an important role in clarifying feedback and supporting students’ emotional adaptation. These findings highlight the dynamic nature of affective engagement in AI-mediated feedback and suggest the importance of pedagogical scaffolding when integrating AI tools in EFL writing instruction.
