Focusing on the collaborative use of generative AI in L2 writing, this study examines how university EFL students engage with ChatGPT in group writing tasks and how these experiences shape their subsequent individual use of AI. Seventeen first-year English education majors in Korea participated in a 15-week composition course where they completed collaborative writing tasks using ChatGPT, individual writing assignments, reflective journals, and interviews. Analysis of these data revealed that students did not adopt a single approach to using ChatGPT. Instead, each group developed distinct collaborative practices regarding when ChatGPT should be consulted, how its suggestions should be evaluated, and what role it should play during writing. Over time, students shifted from viewing ChatGPT primarily as a source of correct language to treating it as a collaborative partner whose suggestions required discussion and critical evaluation. These collaborative experiences also influenced students’ subsequent individual engagement with ChatGPT by encouraging more strategic, reflective, and purposeful use of AI. The findings highlight the importance of understanding ChatGPT as a resource whose educational role is negotiated through collaborative interaction rather than determined solely by its technological capabilities.

The goals of Asia TEFL are to promote scholarship, disseminate information, and facilitate cross-cultural understanding among persons concerned with the teaching and learning of English in Asia. In order to accomplish this, Asia TEFL will pursue the following goals:
1. To link ELT professionals in joint research on issues and concerns regarding English teaching and learning in the Asian context.
2. To publish an academic journal, The Asia TEFL Journal, as an internationally recognized journal in the field of English language teaching.
3. To host conferences and seminars addressing important issues concerning ELT in Asia.
4. To develop proficiency guidelines and assessment methods designed for the needs of the Asian context.
5. To develop programs for Asian learners and teachers of English to build their English language proficiency and cultural understanding and provide them with the skills required to be efficient English teaching professionals.
