The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) has expanded opportunities for oral English practice beyond traditional classrooms. In vocational tourism education, however, oral English functions primarily as a workplace communication skill rather than an academic objective, and the pedagogical value of AI-assisted language learning remains underexplored, particularly in practice-oriented contexts. This qualitative study examines AI-assisted oral English learning in a vocational tourism programme in China, drawing on focus group discussions with 12 tourism students and semi-structured interviews with two English instructors. Participants perceived AI-assisted tools as providing accessible and low-pressure opportunities for oral English practice, with reported benefits including reduced speaking anxiety, increased participation, and support for tourism-specific language use. At the same time, participants reported notable limitations, difficulty processing lengthy or complex AI responses, and difficulties sustaining extended spoken interaction. Crucially, both students and teachers emphasised that the pedagogical value of AI-assisted learning depends on pedagogical scaffolding, task design, and institutional support rather than on technology alone. Overall, the study positions AI-assisted oral English learning as a context-dependent pedagogical resource rather than a self-sufficient instructional solution, offering qualitative insights into its conditional value in vocational tourism education.
