Paraphrasing is a pivotal academic writing skill that enables writers to restate source ideas accurately in sufficiently transformed language while mitigating patchwriting. Yet many EFL learners struggle to preserve meaning while reformulating source language. This study examined three questions: the extent of change in Vietnamese EFL undergraduates’ paraphrasing performance following sustained strategy instruction, which dimensions of paraphrase quality showed the greatest gains, and what challenges learners reported during the intervention. A mixed-methods one-group pretest–posttest intervention design was used with 42 undergraduates in Vietnam over six weeks. Participants completed pre- and post-intervention paraphrasing assessments scored with an analytic rubric, while reflective journals and semi-structured interviews provided qualitative evidence. Paired-samples t tests and effect sizes examined performance gains, and qualitative data were analysed thematically. Results showed statistically significant improvement in overall paraphrasing performance. Analytic dimension scores indicated the largest proportional gain in meaning preservation, followed by syntactic transformation and idea organisation. Qualitative findings showed that lexical and grammatical control remained recurring constraints during strategy application, alongside concern about semantic distortion, time pressure, and overreliance on technology during independent practice. The findings support sustained strategy instruction while highlighting the need for continued scaffolding in lexical development, meaning verification, and responsible technology use.
