Although data-driven learning (DDL) research has begun to extend to pre-tertiary settings, the potential of multimodal input for supporting learners in these settings has not yet been empirically examined. This study presents one of the first implementations of multimodal DDL for pre-tertiary learners, drawing on the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML). Given the exploratory nature of the study, a single-group design was used to examine learning outcomes and learner perceptions. Participants were 43 Korean middle school learners at the CEFR A2 level. The main intervention consisted of three 40-minute sessions, each targeting one request expression appropriate for low-PDR situations and another appropriate for high-PDR situations (six total). In each session, participants first used a multimodal DDL platform to view videos and answer guiding questions and then completed pair discussions and speaking practice with a collaborative worksheet. Pre-test, post-test, and delayed post-test scores indicated an immediate increase in sociopragmatic scores, but not pragmalinguistic scores, with little evidence of long-term retention in either domain. Participants’ answers to the guiding questions, questionnaire responses, and interviews revealed that, despite difficulties in video comprehension and spoken discourse completion tests (DCTs), they drew on multimodal cues and visual enhancements to infer sociopragmatic features of communicative situations.

The goals of Asia TEFL are to promote scholarship, disseminate information, and facilitate cross-cultural understanding among persons concerned with the teaching and learning of English in Asia. In order to accomplish this, Asia TEFL will pursue the following goals: 1. To link ELT professionals in joint research on issues and concerns regarding English teaching and learning in the Asian context. 2. To publish an academic journal, The Asia TEFL Journal, as an internationally recognized journal in the field of English language teaching. 3. To host conferences and seminars addressing important issues concerning ELT in Asia. 4. To develop proficiency guidelines and assessment methods designed for the needs of the Asian context. 5. To develop programs for Asian learners and teachers of English to build their English language proficiency and cultural understanding and provide them with the skills required to be efficient English teaching professionals.
