This study aims to explore the potential for formative expression in upcycled jewelry design by utilizing the material properties of discarded acrylic. Through a literature review and case analysis, the concepts and characteristics of upcycling, as well as the properties and current applications of discarded acrylic materials, were examined. Based on these findings, jewelry designs were developed under the theme of “Sogwang (溯光)”, employing the transparency, workability, and light-refracting properties of discarded acrylic to create organic curves and three-dimensional forms. The scope of the jewelry design development comprised four categories: rings, earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. The findings of this study demonstrate that the physical and visual properties of discarded acrylic can be reinterpreted and reconstructed into a contemporary formative language. Furthermore, the study confirms the potential of discarded materials to acquire new aesthetic value and expand the possibilities of expressive approaches in upcycled jewelry design.

본 연구는 폐기 아크릴 소재의 특성을 활용한 업사이클링 주얼리 디자인의 조형적 표현 가능성을 탐구하는 데 목적이 있다. 문헌연구와 사례분석을 통해 업사이클링의 개념과 특성, 폐기 아크릴 소재의 특성 및 활용 현황을 고찰하였다. 이를 바탕으로 연구자의 테마인 ‘소광(溯光)’을 주제로 폐기 아크릴의 투명성, 가공성 및 빛의 굴절 특성을 활용하여 유기적 곡선과 입체적 조형을 중심으로 디자인 개발을 하였다. 디자인 개발을 한 주얼리의 범위는 반지, 귀걸이, 팔찌, 목걸이 등 4개이다. 본 연구를 통해 폐기 아크릴의 물성과 시각적 특성을 현대적 조형 언어로 재구성이 가능하다는 점과 아울러 폐기소재의 새로운 미적 가치와 업사이클링 주얼리 디자인의 표현 가능성을 확인하였다.
