- This study examines how nonverbal physical expression in film acting produces meaning through mise-en-scène and camera composition. Major scenes from On the Waterfront, Casablanca, and Modern Timeswere qualitatively analyzed with a focus on bodily expression, the relationship between props and space, camera composition, subtext, and charade functions. The results show that hand gestures, facial expressions, gaze, and repetitive actions interact with props, spatial arrangement, and framing to reveal characters’ emotions and relationships without relying on dialogue. These nonverbal bodily actions function as charade-like forms of meaning-making that visually convey relational tension, restrained emotion, and social conditions. This study is significant in that it approaches nonverbal physical expression not merely as an actor’s expressive technique, but as a cinematic meaning-making process created through the interaction of bodily action, mise-en-scène, and camera composition.

- 본 연구는 영화연기에서 나타나는 비언어적 신체표현이 미장센과 카메라 구성 속에서 어떠한 의미를 형성하는지를 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 ｢On the Waterfront｣, ｢Casablanca｣, ｢Modern Times｣의 주요장면을 대상으로 신체표현, 소품과 공간의 관계, 카메라 구성, 서브텍스트, 셔레이드 기능을 중심으로 질적 장면분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과 손동작과 표정, 시선, 반복행동은 소품과 공간, 프레이밍과 결합하여 인물의 심리와 관계를 대사 없이 드러내는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 이러한 비언어적 신체행위는 관계적 긴장, 억제된 감정, 사회적 조건을 시각적으로 전달하는 셔레이드적 의미 작용을 형성하였다. 본 연구는 비언어적 신체표현을 배우 개인의 표현기술에 한정하지 않고 신체행위와 미장센, 카메라 구성의 상호작용을 통해 영화적 의미가 형성되는 과정으로 분석하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
