Objective : This study explored care workers’ experiences of sensory responses and occupational participation among adults with profound developmental disabilities. Methods : This qualitative study, conducted using Giorgi’s phenomenological methodology, analyzed in-depth interviews of five care workers who had supported adults with profound developmental disabilities for at least one year. The data were analyzed by identifying meaning units, transforming them into disciplinary expressions, and deriving sub-constituents and themes. Results : Four themes, 11 subconstituents, and 32 meaning units were identified. The four themes were “sensory-related challenging behaviors and responses”, “limitations and possibilities in occupational participation”, “care workers’ dilemmas between protection and autonomy”, and “care extending beyond the individual through relationships and support systems”. Conclusion : Challenging behaviors in adults with profound developmental disabilities can be better understood within the sensory, physical, and environmental contexts. Occupational participation should be viewed not only in terms of independent performance but also as a gradual process of engagement in daily activities through repeated experiences and graded support. Therefore, an integrated assessment framework is needed to jointly consider sensory responses, challenging behaviors, participation in daily activities, and environmental contexts and to link these findings to individualized support.

목적 : 본 연구는 최중증 성인 발달장애인을 돌보는 종사자의 경험을 통해 돌봄 과정에서 나타나는 감각 반응과 작업 참여의 의미를 탐색하고자 하였다. 연구방법 : 본 연구는 Giorgi의 현상학적 연구방법을 적용하여 최중증 성인 발달장애인을 1년 이상 지원한 경험이 있는 돌봄 종사자 5명을 대상으로 개별 심층면담을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 의미단위, 학문적 표현으로의 전환, 하위구성요소와 주제 도출의 절차에 따라 분석하였다. 결과 : 분석 결과, 4개의 주제, 11개의 하위구성요소, 32개의 의미단위가 도출되었다. 도출된 주제는 ‘감각 조절 어려움과 연결된 도전 행동을 이해하고 대처해가는 경험’, ‘작업 참여의 한계를 경험하고 가능성을 발견해가는 경험’, ‘보호와 자립 사이에서 경험하는 종사자의 실천적 딜레마’, ‘개인을 넘어 관계와 체계 속에서 이어지는 돌봄’이었다. 결론 : 최중증 성인 발달장애인의 도전 행동은 감각적·신체적·환경적 맥락에서 이해할 필요가 있으며, 작업참여는 독립 수행 여부보다 반복 경험과 단계적 지원을 통해 일상 활동에 관여하는 과정으로 바라볼 필요가 있다. 따라서 감각 반응, 도전 행동, 일상 활동 참여 및 환경적 맥락을 함께 파악하고, 이를 개별화된 지원으로 연결할 수 있는 통합적 사정 체계가 필요하다.
