Purpose : This study aimed to examine the relationship between social jetlag and physical discomfort of wage workers and to verify the mediating effect of fatigue on this relationship. Methods : This cross-sectional secondary data analysis utilized the data from the 2024 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The study included 2,220 wage workers aged 19 years or older with the complete data on primary variables. Social jetlag was calculated as the absolute difference (in hours) between mid-sleep time on off days and workdays. Fatigue was measured using a single fatigue item from the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (range: 0–3), and physical discomfort was measured as the number of days during the past two weeks in which poor physical health limited activities (range: 0–14 days). Complex sample analyses incorporating sampling weights, stratification, and clustering were performed using R version 4.4.3. The mediating effect of fatigue was evaluated using weighted linear regression and 5,000 bootstrap resamples after adjusting for sociodemographic, occupational, and health-related covariates. Results : Social jetlag was positively associated with fatigue (B=0.06, p=.007), and fatigue was positively associated with physical discomfort (B=0.55, p<.001). The direct effect of social jetlag on physical discomfort was not statistically significant (B=-0.12, p=.113). However, the indirect effect of social jetlag on physical discomfort through fatigue was statistically significant (indirect effect=0.03, 95% CI 0.01~0.06), indicating an indirect-only mediation pattern. Conclusion : A significant indirect association between social jetlag and physical discomfort through fatigue was observed among wage workers. These findings indicate that occupational health interventions should go beyond simply managing sleep duration to incorporate fatigue assessment, sleep hygiene education, and organizational strategies aimed at minimizing sleep-schedule discrepancies between workdays and off days.
