Sunchang was not a large county, but it had a long history, beautiful scenery, and a relatively comfortable living environment. However, Sunchang is not particularly known for a rich musical heritage. Until the late Joseon Dynasty, the region produced few notable musicians, and no distinctive musical tradition had emerged. Today, its most notable musical legacy is perhaps the Geumgwa Field Songs (Geumgwa Deulsori). The emergence of more sophisticated professional music in Sunchang came through pansori. In the mid-to-late nineteenth century, a remarkable number of renowned pansori singers emerged from Sunchang, including Ju Deok-gi, Park Yu-jeon, Kim Se-jong, and Jang Jae-baek. Their appearance transformed Sunchang into a major center of pansori. One notable aspect is that although these singers suddenly rose to prominence and played a leading role in the development of Korean pansori, they did not leave behind a distinct local tradition of their singing style in Sunchang itself. Instead, their musical legacy continued more vigorously in other regions. Park Yu-jeon’s style relocated its base to the Boseong area of South Jeolla Province and was revived splendidly as the so-called Gangsanje pansori, which became one of the most important styles in modern pansori. Kim Se-jong’s pansori style was also incorporated into the Boseong tradition and came to represent the modern version of Chunhyangga. Jang Jae-baek, a native of Sunchang, moved to Namwon later in life. Considering that members of his family later became influential figures in Namwon pansori, one can infer the extent of his influence there. In the twentieth century, the master singer Jang Pan-gae was active in Sunchang. The most recent renowned pansori singer from Sunchang was Park Bok-nam. After Korea’s liberation from Japanese imperialism, however, it became difficult to find prominent pansori masters residing in the region. Although Jang Yeong-chan and Seong Un-seon were active performers, they had relocated to cities such as Seoul and Jeonju. In this context, Park Bok-nam was recognized as a holder of Jeollabuk-do Intangible Cultural Heritage and remained in Sunchang, preserving the region’s pansori tradition after a long period of decline. In modern times, pansori in Sunchang gradually declined and failed to produce outstanding master singers. Nevertheless, Sunchang has continued to produce performers of a caliber worthy of local intangible cultural heritage status, such as Seong Un-seon and Park Bok-nam. In doing so, it has managed to preserve, however faintly, the legacy of its former glory as the birthplace of two major schools of pansori.
