This study compared and analyzed the noise characteristics of original mufflers and tuning mufflers on a Daelim VJF125 motorcycle. Experimental results revealed that the tuning muffler produced significantly higher overall noise—by more than 30 dB—compared to the original muffler. Noise levels rose from 61.1 dB to 90.1 dB at 2,000 RPM, and from 65.6 dB to 96.7 dB (peaking at 98.7 dB) at 5,000 RPM. This sharp increase occurred because removing the internal noise-reduction structure allowed exhaust energy to be discharged directly. In particular, noise in the 1–4 kHz high-frequency range, to which human hearing is most sensitive, increased substantially, maximizing auditory discomfort and harshness. In conclusion, muffler modification was confirmed to cause significant noise pollution and discomfort. The study suggests that further research is required to evaluate its actual impact on vehicle performance, such as power output and torque, beyond noise characteristics.
