Performance Comparison and Analysis of High-Precision Attitude Estimation S ystems Using High-Performance IMU and Geomagnetic Sensors
This study presents a performance comparison and analysis of attitude estimation systems integrating state-of-the-art high-performance IMUs (ICM-42688, BMI088, ICM-45686) and a 3-axis geomagnetic sensor (RM3100), which are crucial for autonomous driving, robotics, and drone applications. Sensor characteristics were analyzed, and high-speed data acquisition was conducted in a microcontroller-based logging environment. Six-face calibration was performed to correct gyroscope and accelerometer biases, while ellipsoid fitting was applied to compensate for hard- and soft-iron errors in the RM3100. A quaternion-based Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) was designed for sensor fusion, and the static and dynamic attitude estimation errors (RMSE) for each sensor combination were quantitatively evaluated using a motion capture system as ground truth.
