The Effects of Franchisors' Marketing Efforts and Operating Systems on Franchise Relationship Continuity : The Mediating Roles of Trust and Fairness
As competition intensifies and markets become increasingly saturated, franchisors’ marketing strategies and operating systems have emerged as critical factors affecting not only franchisee performance but also the long-term sustainability of franchisor–franchisee relationships. Drawing on transaction cost theory and social exchange theory, this study examines the relationships between franchisors and franchisees. Specifically, it investigates how franchisors’ marketing efforts and operating systems influence performance and relationship continuity through the relational mechanisms of trust and perceived fairness. The moderating effect of conflict on the relationship between trust and performance is also examined. Survey data were collected from franchisees, yielding 161 valid responses. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed because the proposed model incorporates multidimensional latent constructs and multiple mediating and moderating paths. The results show that franchisors’ marketing efforts significantly enhance trust but do not directly affect perceived fairness. In contrast, the operating system is identified as a key determinant of perceived fairness. Both trust and fairness exert significant positive effects on performance, while trust and performance are the primary predictors of relationship continuity. However, the direct effect of fairness on relationship continuity is not statistically significant. The moderating effect of conflict is also found to be insignificant. These findings suggest that franchise relationships should be understood not merely as contractual arrangements but as a developmental process through which strategic implementation shapes relational perceptions, performance experiences, and ultimately relationship continuity. By demonstrating that franchisors’ marketing efforts and operating systems affect relationship quality through distinct pathways, this study extends the theoretical understanding of franchise relationships. It also provides practical implications for franchisors seeking to strengthen relationship management, improve franchisee performance, and promote sustainable long-term partnerships.
