Evaluation of Retention, Infiltration, and Runoff Delay Characteristics of LID Facilities in an Industrial Complex under Different Rainfall Intensity Conditions
This study compared the retention, infiltration, runoff occurrence, runoff delay, and vertical infiltration rates of a bioretention planter (BP), an infiltration trench (IT), and a small-scale detention facility (SSDF) installed in the Jinju Sangpyeong industrial complex testbed under an observed rainfall event (OBS) and three artificial rainfall conditions with different return periods and durations (AR-100y-6h, AR-100y-2h, and AR-500y-1h). No runoff occurred under OBS; however, inflow rates and effective contributing conditions differed among the facilities, indicating that site-specific inflow characteristics should be considered in field-scale evaluations. BP exhibited a combined retention–infiltration response under both observed and artificial rainfall conditions, whereas IT showed an infiltration-dominant response characterized by rapid drainage and high infiltration capacity. In contrast, SSDF provided effective temporary storage but generated direct runoff under the high-intensity artificial rainfall condition because of its limited storage capacity. The mean vertical infiltration rate was 0.127 ± 0.006 m/hr for BP and 0.751 ± 0.236 m/hr for IT, confirming the substantially greater infiltration capacity of IT. BP also showed relatively stable runoff delay behavior, indicating the hydraulic advantage of a facility in which storage and infiltration operate simultaneously. These results suggest that the hydraulic performance of LID facilities in highly impervious spaces such as industrial complexes should be evaluated from a water-balance perspective that considers retention, infiltration, and runoff delay together, rather than relying on infiltration rate alone. They further indicate that combining facilities with complementary storage and infiltration functions may be more effective than relying on a single facility type in such environments.
