This study explored how early childhood teachers, as adult readers, experienced and constructed meanings while reading realistic picture books. The findings were as follows. First, while reading realistic picture books, the teachers demonstrated various emotional responses, recalled personal experiences, and connected the characters, events, and settings in the picture books to the real world. Second, their reader experiences and meaning-making processes provided opportunities to reconsider and expand their understandings of young children’s lives and experiences. Third, they explored both the educational possibilities and limitations of realistic picture books. Overall, reading realistic picture books was a meaningful literary experience for the teachers, and this study is significant in that it illustrates the educational dilemmas experienced by teachers as both adult readers and educators.

본 연구는 유아교사들이 사실주의 그림책을 읽고 성인독자로 어떤 독자경험과 의미구성을 하는지 알아보고자 하였다. 연구 참여자는 대구·구미 지역의 유아교육기관에서 근무하고 있는 유아교사 11명이며 자료수집은 그룹면담으로 60분에서 90분 동안, 각 3회 진행되었다. 연구 결과 첫째, 유아교사들은 사실주의 그림책을 읽으며 다양한 정서적 반응을 보이고 개인적 경험을 떠올리며 그림책 속 인물, 사건, 배경을 현실 세계와 연결하였다. 둘째, 유아교사의 독자경험과 의미구성은 현대 유아의 삶과 경험을 새롭게 바라보게 하는 계기로 작용하였다. 셋째, 유아교사들은 사실주의 그림책의 교육적 가능성과 한계를 탐색하였다. 사실주의 그림책 읽기는 유아교사에게 정서적 반응과 개인적 경험을 환기하는 동시에, 유아에 대한 이해를 넓히고 교육 실천의 가능성과 한계를 탐색 하는 의미있는 문학적 경험이 되었다. 또한 본 연구는 성인독자이며 동시에 유아교사이기에 할 수 있는 그들의 교육적 딜레마를 구체적으로 보여주었다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
