The concept of ‘robot’ in Korea originated with Lee Gwang-su, who introduced the content of Cha Baek’s play ‘R.U.R.’ in Japan. The term ‘robot’ was first introduced in 1923 as ‘Android Man.’ After this, Korean robots were influenced by Yoshitaro Suzuki’s translation of ‘robot’ as ‘artificial worker,’ leading to the concept of ‘robot = exploited worker.’ However, as the image of robots changes from flesh-and-blood bodies that resemble humans to mechanical bodies, the image of robots will change to what it is today: beings that free humans from labor. In the mid-1930s, as the world entered a period of war, interest in robots waned. However, Japan’s interest in robots was transformed into manga, where they became an image of justice, represented by “Astro Boy” who protects humans.
