Referential Targets and Functions of Second-Person Pronouns in Japanese Print Advertisements - A Study of Their Relationship with Sentence-Final Expressions -
This study analyzes the pragmatic functions of second-person pronouns in Japanese print advertisements (2000–2023), focusing on the correlation between referents and sentence-final expressions. Referents are categorized into: (1) Unspecified Masses, (2) Specific Groups, and (3) Imaginary Recipients. The results show that lexical choice varies significantly by category. While anata serves as the standard for universal appeal, pronouns like kimi and omae are used strategically to modulate interpersonal distance. Notably, within the “Imaginary Recipients” category, although the number of cases is limited, omae was found to be a relatively prominent choice. This suggests that fictional contexts may relax social norms, enabling a more dramatic and emotional mode of address that functions as a narrative device. Regarding sentence-final forms, interrogatives are frequently used to heighten “self-relevance.” Furthermore, the complete absence of hortatory or imperative forms (0 cases) among imaginary recipients suggests a strategy of fostering indirect empathy through narrative rather than direct solicitation. This research demonstrates that second-person pronouns in advertising function as sophisticated “pragmatic strategies” tailored to specific communicative goals.
