This paper examines the use of sa that co-occurs with conjunctive particles and reportative forms, as in examples such as Saki ni kaeru kara sa “I’ll head home first, you know,” and Raishū tesuto ga arun da tte sa “I heard there’s a test next week.” At the discourse level, these instances of sa follow complete and sufficient utterances and function as markers of the speaker’s stance toward the addressee; in this respect, they can be regarded as sentence-final–particle–like. By using this sentence-final sa, the speaker displays an orientation toward sharing the propositional content with the addressee while refraining from imposing it, thereby leaving acceptance to the listener. This sentence-final sa differs from the traditional sentence-final particle sa, which attaches to predicates in their terminal form, in terms of constraints on the speaker’s gender, optionality of use, and the presence or absence of the sense of obviousness conventionally associated with sa.
