This study retrospectively examines the Buddhist Purification Movement, the largest event and movement in modern and contemporary Korean Buddhist history, and summarizes its various characteristics. In doing so, it aims to identify new research topics. While numerous publications, theses, and retrospectives on the Purification Movement have been written, few have academically summarized or critiqued it. Therefore, it is difficult to grasp the overall outline, nature, research achievements, and challenges of the Buddhist Purification Movement. Mindful of these aspects, the author wrote this article with the following perspectives: First, I aimed to write a concise and clear overview of the history of research on the Purification Movement. Second, I organized introductory books and monographs on the movement. Third, I aimed to outline the Purification Movement, including its factors (internal and external causes) and its context (Buddhism under Japanese colonial rule and Buddhism in the post-liberation period). Fourth, I aimed to elucidate the nature and ideology of the Purification Movement. Fifth, I sought to identify the development process and key players of the Purification Movement. Sixth, I attempted to summarize the influence, succession, and byproducts of the Purification Movement. Seventh, I sought to identify research topics related to the Purification Movement. I hope this paper, written from the above perspective, will contribute to a renewed understanding of the Buddhist Purification Movement, a reexamination of Buddhist history at the time, and research on the key figures in the movement.

본 고찰은 한국 근현대 불교사에서 가장 큰 사건이자 운동인 불교정화운동에 대한 연구를 회고하고 그에 나타난 제반 성격을 정리한 글이다. 그러면서 새로운 연구 과제를 도출하고자 하였다. 지금껏 정화운동에 대한 다양한 저술, 논문, 회고 등이 있었지만 그를 학술적으로 정리하고, 비평한 글은 많지 않았다. 그래서 불교 정화운동에 대한 전체적인 개요, 성격, 연구 성과, 문제점 등을 파악하기는 어렵다. 이런 측면을 유의한 필자는 다음과 같은 관점에서 이 글을 집필하였다. 첫째, 정화운동에 대한 연구사를 간단명료하게 이해할 수 있는 글을 쓰 고자 하였다. 둘째, 정화운동에 대한 개설서, 단행본, 논문 등을 정리하였다. 셋째, 정화운동의 개요 즉 요인(내인론, 외인론), 배경(일제하의 불교, 해 방공간의 불교)을 파악하고자 하였다. 넷째, 정화운동의 성격과 이념을 도출하고자 하였다. 다섯째, 정화운동의 전개 과정 및 주역을 찾고자 하였다. 여섯째, 정화운동의 영향, 계승, 부산물 등을 정리하려고 하였다. 일곱째, 정화운동에 대한 추후의 연구 과제를 도출하고자 하였다. 이상과 같은 관점에서 서술한 이 논고가 불교정화운동에 대한 재인식, 그 당시 불교사의 재조명, 정화운동의 주역 등의 연구에 참고가 되길 기대한다.
