Soil erosion by water is arguably the most significant environmental threat to the sustainability of agricultural systems in the Ethiopian Highlands. In the Werie Watershed, located within the rugged terrains of Northern Ethiopia, the combination of steep topography, erratic yet high-intensity rainfall, and historical land-use pressure has created a landscape highly susceptible to topsoil loss. This study provides a comprehensive, spatially explicit analysis of soil erosion dynamics across three distinct agro-ecological zones (AEZs): the Lowland (Kolla), Midland (Weina Dega), and Highland (Dega) zones. By integrating the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS), this research captures the complex biophysical interactions that drive land degradation. The significance of this study lies in its ability to move beyond a simplistic watershed-wide average, providing a high-resolution diagnostic tool that identifies specific "hotspots" of erosion, thereby allowing for the precision application of soil and water conservation (SWC) measures.
