This study proposes a hybrid nail clipper mechanism that combines a button-actuated input structure with a scissor-type cutting mechanism to overcome the limitations of conventional lever-type nail clippers, including the single-lever force transmission structure and the mismatch between the input and cutting directions. The proposed mechanism consists of an input module and a cutting module, in which linear input motion is converted into rotational motion through an internal inclined surface and transmitted to the cutting module. The modular configuration separates the force transmission path and simplifies the input process, while the scissor-type mechanism enables progressive cutting motion. To verify the feasibility of the proposed mechanism, a prototype was fabricated and cutting performance tests were conducted. The experimental results showed that the proposed mechanism required an average input force of 6.6 N, compared with 4.6 N for a conventional lever-type nail clipper, while successfully cutting artificial nails. Although the required input force increased, the proposed mechanism demonstrates the feasibility of a modular force transmission structure and its potential to improve user convenience. Furthermore, the proposed mechanism presents an alternative design concept for compact cutting devices and personal care products.
