This study aims to understand the experiences of adult learners who transferred to a four-year university to major in social welfare. Specifically, it explored the life backgrounds and motivations that led them to transfer, their experiences of university life after transfer, and the changes and meanings that transfer brought to their lives. For this purpose, focus group interviews (FGI) were conducted with 11 adult learners, divided into two groups of five and six participants. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Four themes emerged from the analysis: “the life of a late learner and the starting point of learning,” “returning to university,” “living through study,” and “changes brought by learning and orientation toward the future.” The participants’ transfer experiences began with long-standing life experiences and unmet desires for learning, were shaped by practical motivations for professionalism and qualifications as well as the influence of relational networks, and unfolded through university life in which the difficulties of balancing work, family, and study coexisted with the joy of learning. These experiences ultimately led to changes in self-understanding, relationships, and social welfare practice, as well as to a sustained commitment to lifelong learning. These findings suggest that adult learners’ transfer to a four-year university is not merely a change of academic affiliation or a means of obtaining a degree, but a transformative experience through which they reconstruct their lives as a whole. This study provides a foundational basis for supporting adult learners’ transfer and adjustment to university life.

본 연구는 사회복지 전공으로 4년제 대학에 편입한 성인학습자의 편입 경험을 이해하는 데 목적이 있다. 구체적으로 이들이 편입에 이르게 된 생애적 배경과 계기, 편입 이후의 대학생활 경험, 그리고 편입이 삶에 가져 온 변화와 의미를 탐색하였다. 이를 위해 편입을 경험한 성인학습자 11명을 두 개 집단(각 5명, 6명)으로 나누어 초점집단면담(FGI)을 실시하고, 수집된 자료를 주제분석(thematic analysis) 방법으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과 ‘만학의 삶과 배움의 출발’, ‘다시 대학으로’, ‘학업을 살아내기’, ‘배움이 일으킨 변화와 미래를 향한 지향’의 네 가지 주제가 도출되었다. 참여자들의 편입은 오랜 생애 경험과 미충족된 배움의 욕구에서 출발하여, 전문성과 자격을 향한 현실적 동기와 관계망의 작용 속에서 실행되었으며, 일·가정·학업을 병행하는 어려움과 배움의 즐거움이 공존하는 대학생활을 거쳐, 자기 이해, 관계, 실천 현장 전반의 변화와 평생학습 의지로 이어졌다. 이는 성인학습자의 4년제 편입이 단순한 학적 이동이나 학위 취득의 수단을 넘어, 개인의 생애 전반을 다시 구성해 가는 전환적 경험임을 보여준다. 본 연구는 성인학습자의 편입과 대학생활 적응을 지원하기 위한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있다.
