This paper investigates the psychological dynamics of religious development by focusing on the role of the ego as the responsible and authentic subject of religious development and spiritual maturation. Although Freud’s critique of religion raised suspicion toward religious experience, subsequent psychological approaches represented religion as a meaningful dimension of human development rather than a mere illusion. Based on Paul Pruyser’s notion of the ‘illusionistic world,’ this study argues that religion has an experiential area in which inner subjectivity and outer reality are imaginatively mediated and transformed. From this perspective, the paper examines Carl Jung’s theory of individuation, John J. Shea’s concept of the adult self-in-mutuality, Viktor Frankl’s will to meaning, Ken Wilber’s critique of dualism, and Daniel A. Helminiak’s account of reflective and non-reflective consciousness. These perspectives collectively show that religious development requires an authentic and integral self capable of responsibility, self-reflection, and integration of the unconscious. This paper proposes authenticity as a criterion for evaluating subjective religious experience. Genuine development involves reflective discernment, the pursuit of meaning, and movement toward psychic and spiritual wholeness. Finally, this study contends that psychological accounts of development need to include theological themes of divine love and grace. The innate human capacity for integration and maturation is sustained by God’s gracious activity in human experience.
