The Emergence of Family Resilience and the Strengthening of Family Support among Families of Persons Recovering from Drug Addiction : A Multiple Case Study
This study aimed to explore the contexts in which family resilience emerges among families of persons recovering from drug addiction and the ways in which family support is strengthened during the recovery process. To achieve this purpose, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with family members from 21 cases involving persons in recovery from drug addiction. The data were analyzed using a multiple case study approach, including within-case analysis, cross-case analysis, and pattern matching. The findings revealed that family resilience emerged through the process of reinterpreting drug problems not merely as individual deviance but as crises embedded in family relationships and life-course contexts. Family resilience was strengthened when families acknowledged past wounds and damaged trust, and when persons in recovery transformed guilt into responsible action. Family support was also reconstructed as “bounded support,” which refers to supporting recovery-oriented behaviors while setting clear boundaries against risky behaviors such as drug use, deception, treatment avoidance, and harmful relationships. In addition, family resilience was reinforced through a structural safety net that combined treatment, counseling, self-help groups, daily life structure, and the avoidance of high-risk environments. The patterns of family resilience were not uniform across cases. They appeared in various forms, including acknowledgment of wounds, recovery of responsibility, construction of a structural safety net, maintenance of safe distance, responses to economic and institutional crises, and recovery of the family system as a whole. This study suggests that families of persons recovering from drug addiction should not be viewed merely as caregivers or auxiliary supporters, but as co-participants in recovery and as independent subjects in need of support. Based on these findings, the study discusses the need for an integrated family support system that includes family counseling, family education, boundary-setting training, family self-help groups, and connections with treatment institutions and community-based recovery resources.
