This study empirically investigates the relationship between news sentiment, news volume, and short term stock returns for seven representative U.S. big tech firms, Tesla, Apple, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and NVIDIA, commonly referred to as the ‘Magnificent 7’ using CNN headlines from 2020 to 2023. To conduct the analysis, a daily firm-level panel dataset comprising 4,858 observations was constructed. News timestamps were converted from UTC to New York time with Daylight Saving Time adjustments to control for information incorporation lags; specifically, pre-market and intraday news were matched with same-day returns, while after-market news was matched with next-day returns. For sentiment measurement, both the general-purpose language model BERT and the finance-specific model FinBERT were employed to calculate daily firm-level news volume and weighted average sentiment. Subsequently, multiple regression analysis was performed, controlling for market returns and changes in volatility. The results show that, among the news related variables, FinBERT based average sentiment exhibited a statistically significant positive association in the pooled sample, whereas BERT based average sentiment was not statistically significant. News volume did not show significant explanatory power in models including control variables. Furthermore, firm-level analyses revealed heterogeneity across firms, with sentiment effects being statistically significant only for certain companies, such as Amazon and Meta. Meanwhile, market returns showed a strong and statistically significant positive association with short term returns across all models, confirming that short term price fluctuations were explained more strongly by market wide common factors than by firm specific news variables. By comparing a general-purpose model with a finance-specific model using the same sample, this study demonstrates that financial domain specificity significantly influences the empirical significance of sentiment indicators. It also suggests that market responses to news sentiment may vary depending on firm specific characteristics.
