This study aimed to examine the partial mediating effect of empathy in the relationship between interpersonal competence and problem-solving ability among nursing students. The participants were nursing students from a specific region in South Korea, and data were collected from May 10 to June 5, 2025. A total of 189 students were included in the final analysis. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression were applied to analyze the data. The mediating effect was verified using SPSS PROCESS Macro 4.0. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that low academic performance (𝛽 =-0.259, p=.003) had a significant negative effect on problem-solving ability, while interpersonal competence (𝛽=0.298, p<.001), and empathy ability(𝛽=0.237, p<.001) had significant positive effects on problem-solving ability. Furthermore, empathy partially mediated the relationship between interpersonal competence and problem-solving ability, suggesting that interpersonal competence may enhance problem-solving ability through empathy. Therefore, strengthening empathy should be considered an effective strategy to improve the problem-solving skills of nursing students. In particular, for first- and second-year students, developing and applying educational programs that enhance both interpersonal and empathic competencies could facilitate smoother problem-solving and contribute to positive learning experiences.

본 연구는 간호대학생의 대인관계능력과 문제해결능력의 관계에서 공감능력의 부분매개효과를 규명하기 위해 수행되었다. 연구 대상자는 일부 지역의 간호대학생으로 구성되었으며, 연구 기간은 2025년 5월10일부터 6월5일 까지 진행되었다. 최종 분석에 포함된 대상자는 189명이었다. 수집된 자료는 기술통계, t-검정(t-test), 분산분석(ANOVA), Pearson 상관분석, 다중회귀분석(Multiple regression) 등을 활용하여 분석하였으며, 매개효과의 통계적 유의성은 SPSS의 PROCESS Macro 4.0을 활용하여 확인하였다. 다중회귀분석 결과, 성적이 낮은 경우(𝛽=-.259, p=.003) 문제 해결능력에 부정적 영향력을, 대인관계능력(𝛽=.298, p<.001), 공감적능력(𝛽=.237, p<.001)이 문제해결능력에 긍정적으로 유의한 영향력을 나타났다. 또한, 대인관계능력과 문제해결능력 간의 관계에서 공감능력 부분매개효과를 가지는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 공감능력은 대인관계능력이 문제해결능력에 미치는 영향을 미치는 과정에서 매개역할을 하며, 대인관계능력이 공감능력을 통해 문제해결능력 향상에 기여할 수 있음을 시사한다. 따라서 간호대학생의 문제해결능력을 증진하기 위한 전략으로 공감능력을 강화하는 방안을 고려할 필요가 있다. 특히, 간호학과 1, 2학년 학생들의 원활한 문제해결능력을 증진하기 위해 대인관계능력을 높이는 동시에 공감능력을 향상시키는 프로그램 개발 및 적용이 요구된다. 이러한 노력이 이루어진다면 긍정적인 경험을 제공하고 성공적인 문제해결능력을 키우는데 기여할 것으로 기대된다.
