This study redefines George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion as an early feminist drama that explores the formation of female subjectivity within the gender power structure, moving beyond its traditional reading as a simple class satire. To overcome the limitations of prior studies that have confined Eliza's transformation to social mobility or a superficial rejection of romance, this study proposes an analytical framework that hierarchically integrates Mulvey's concept of the "gaze," Butler's "performativity," and Foucault's theory of "discourse." Textual analysis reveals that Eliza's metamorphosis is a continuous process: it originates from objectification under Higgins's patriarchal gaze, progresses through the forced performance of oppressive norms via disciplinary language training, and ultimately culminates in the appropriation of that very language to create a restricted yet significant fracture in the dominant power structure as a form of strategic compromise and subversion. Furthermore, this study supplementarily examines the play's reception history to investigate how its open ending has been decoded differently by early 20th-century audiences compared to modern ones. By demonstrating that Eliza's achievement is not a complete subversion of the system but rather a "strategic subjectification within patriarchy," this study provides a more realistic and sophisticated interpretive model for the feminist decoding of classical texts.

본 연구는 버나드 쇼의 극작품 『피그말리온』을 단순한 계급 풍자극을 넘어, 젠더 권력 구조 내 여성의 주체적 정체성 형성 과정을 탐구하는 초기 페미니스트 드라마로 재규정한다. 기존 연구가 일라이자의 변화를 계급 상승이나 피상적인 로맨스 거부로 한정해 해석해온 한계를 극복하기 위해, 본 연구는 멀비의 '시선', 버틀러의 '수행성', 푸코의 '담론' 이론을 위계적으로 통합한 분석틀을 제시한다. 텍스트 분석 결과, 일라이자의 변모는 히긴스의 가부장적시선에 의한 객체화에서 출발하여, 언어 훈련이라는 억압적 훈육과 규범의 강제적 수행을 거쳐, 종국에는 그 언어를전유하여 지배 구조에 제한적이나마 균열을 내는 전략적 타협이자 전복의 과정임이 확인되었다. 또한 수용사적 맥락을 보조적으로 검토하여 텍스트의 열린 결말이 당대와 현대에 어떻게 다르게 해독되는지 고찰하였다. 본 연구는 일라이자의 성취가 완벽한 체제 전복이 아닌 '가부장제 내에서의 전략적 주체화'임을 규명함으로써, 고전 텍스트의 페미니즘적 해독에 있어 보다 현실적이고 정교한 해석 모델을 제공한다.
