Middle adulthood is a period in which individuals play important social roles and responsibilities, and a cancer diagnosis during this stage can cause significant physical, psychological, and social changes that affect various aspects of life. Previous studies have mainly focused on psychological variables such as depression, stress, and quality of life among cancer patients using quantitative approaches. Therefore, there are limitations in understanding the deeper meaning of adaptation experienced by middle-aged cancer patients. This study aimed to explore the adaptation experiences of middle-aged cancer patients and to understand the meaning of those experiences. This study adopted a phenomenological research method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with nine middle-aged cancer patients who had experienced cancer treatment. The collected data were analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological analysis method. We found that participants experienced psychological shock after the cancer diagnosis, confronted changes in life roles, and gradually accepted their illness while reconstructing the meaning of life. We also found that support from family members and healthcare professionals played an important role in the adaptation process. We suggest that understanding the adaptation experiences of middle-aged cancer patients can provide important basic data for developing nursing interventions and psychosocial support programs.

중년기는 개인의 사회적 역할과 책임이 중요한 시기로, 이 시기에 암으로 진단을 받는 것은 신체적·심리적·사회적 변화를 초래하며 개인의 삶 전반에 영향을 미친다. 기존 연구들은 주로 암 환자의 우울, 스트레스, 삶의 질 등 심리적 변수 중심의 양적 연구가 많아 중년기 암 환자가 경험하는 적응의 의미를 심층적으로 이해하는 데에는 한계가 있다. 이에 본 연구는 중년기 암 환자의 적응 경험을 탐색하고 그 의미를 이해하고자 수행되었다. 본 연구는 현상학적 연구 방법을 적용하였으며, 암 치료 경험이 있는 중년기 암 환자 9명을 대상으로 심층 면담을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 Giorgi의 현상학적 분석 방법을 사용하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 참여자들은 암으로 진단 이후 심리적 충격을 경험하고 삶의 역할 변화와 현실을 마주하면서 점차 질병을 수용하고 삶의 의미를 재구성하는 적응 과정을 경험하는 것으로 나타났다. 우리는 중년기 암 환자의 적응 과정에서 가족과 의료진의 지지가 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 우리는 이러한 적응 경험에 대한 이해가 중년기 암 환자를 위한 간호 중재 및 심리·사회적 지원 프로그램 개발에 중요한 기초자료가 될 수 있음을 제안한다.
