Analysis of gluteus medius and tensor fasciae latae activation ratio: a surface electromyography-based comparative study of ten rehabilitation exercises
This study aimed to compare the activation ratio of the gluteus medius (GMed) to the tensor fasciae latae (TFL) during rehabilitation exercises, in order to identify exercises that effectively promote selective activation of the GMed. Twenty-one healthy adults participated in the study and performed ten rehabilitation exercises that had previously been reported to elicit high GMed activation in prior studies. Wireless surface electromyography (Delsys EMG) was used to record muscle activity of the GMed and TFL during each exercise. EMG signals were normalized to the maximum voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC), and both the absolute GMed activation and the GMed/TFL activation ratio were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc tests. The results showed that side plank with hip abduction (supporting leg) and side plank with hip abduction (elevated leg) elicited significantly greater GMed activation than the other exercises (p < 0.05), while the clam shell exercise demonstrated a significantly higher GMed/TFL ratio than both the hip abduction and side plank (supporting leg) exercises (p < 0.05). These results indicate that the clam shell exercise demonstrated a significantly higher GMed/TFL activation ratio compared to other exercises, suggesting its relative effectiveness in promoting selective GMed activation.
