This study aims to investigate the thematic structure and developmental patterns of intercultural research in the field of Korean language education by applying BERTopic, an embedding-based topic modeling approach. The dataset consists of 211 studies, including 94 journal articles and 117 theses published in Korea up to March 2026. The titles and abstracts of the studies were combined and used as units of analysis. The analysis identified 14 distinct topics, which were further reorganized into three overarching meta-topics through hierarchical clustering based on semantic similarity: (1) Korean language education systems and intercultural competence discourse, (2) instructional interaction and digital practice discourse, and (3) immigrant-background learners and social adaptation discourse. Topic similarity analysis revealed that intercultural research in Korean language education maintains a shared semantic foundation while simultaneously undergoing gradual differentiation into specialized subdomains. The findings indicate that early intercultural research primarily focused on theoretical foundations, educational systems, and intercultural competence. Over time, the discourse expanded toward learner interaction, social adaptation, identity formation, and digital-media-based instructional practices. In particular, topics related to metaverse-based learning environments and digital interaction emerged as relatively independent subdomains, reflecting recent technological and educational changes. The study also identified different diffusion patterns between journal articles and theses. While theoretical and institutional topics tended to emerge first in academic journals and later expand into theses, practice-oriented and field-based topics were often first developed in theses before diffusing into journal publications. Methodologically, this study demonstrates the usefulness of embedding-based topic modeling for capturing both the semantic coherence and differentiation of intercultural research trends. Unlike frequency-based topic modeling approaches, BERTopic enabled the identification of conceptually related yet contextually differentiated research themes within intercultural discourse. The findings suggest that intercultural research in Korean language education has evolved through multiple pathways shaped by institutional discourse, social change, and emerging digital learning environments.

본 연구에서는 한국어교육 분야에서 이루어진 상호문화 연구의 주제 구조와 담론의전개 양상을 살펴보고자 임베딩 기반 토픽 모델링 기법인 BERTopic을 활용하여 연구동향을 분석하였다. 분석 대상은 2026년 3월까지 한국에서 발표된 학술지 논문 94편과학위논문 117편으로 총 211편이며 각 논문의 제목과 초록을 분석 단위로 활용하였다. 분석 결과 총 14개의 세부 토픽이 도출되었으며, 이는 한국어교육 체제 및 상호문화역량 담론, 교수·학습 상호 작용 및 디지털 실천 담론, 이주배경 학습자와 사회적 적응 담론의 세 가지 상위 범주로 재구성되었다. 또한 토픽 간 유사도 분석을 통해 공통된 이론적 기반 위에서 점진적인 분화가 이루어지고 있음을 확인하였다. 연구는 초기의 이론 및 제도 중심 논의에서 출발하여 상호 작용과 학습자 경험, 사회적 맥락을 반영한 연구로 확장되었으며, 최근에는 디지털 매체 기반 교수·학습 연구가 부상하는 경향을 보였다. 상호문화 담론은 연구 유형과 주제에 따라 상이한 전개 양상을 보였다. 일부 토픽은 학술지를 중심으로 형성된 이후 학위논문으로 확산되는 양상을 보였으며, 현장중심의 연구는 학위논문에서 먼저 축적된 후 학술지로 유입되는 경향이 나타났다. 특정 주제가 시간의 흐름에 따라 재등장하는 순환적 구조도 확인되었다. 이러한 결과는한국어교육 분야의 상호문화 연구가 다양한 연구 생산 구조 안에서 상호 작용하며 형성되어 왔음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 임베딩 기반 토픽 모델을 적용함으로써 상호문화담론의 의미적 응집성과 분화 양상을 동시에 포착하였다는 점에서 방법론적 의의를 지닌다.
