The purpose of this study was to explore, through a single case, the meaning of gambling experience in the process of life-career reconstruction in later life among a Korean man living in a situation of precarious residency. For this purpose, a qualitative life history study was conducted with one Korean man in his seventies who had experienced migration across South America and Asia and was residing in the Philippines on a long-term basis. Data were collected through four in-depth interviews and analyzed primarily using Mandelbaum’s life history framework, while Super’s and Savickas’s perspectives were used supplementarily. The terms “precarious residency” and “gambling experience” were used instead of “illegal stay” and “gambling addiction” to avoid reducing the participant’s experience to legal stigma or pathological categories. The findings showed that the participant’s life had been reconstructed toward a narrowing life-world and reduced choices through accumulated turning points, including long-term residence abroad and family loss. Precarious residency functioned as a key condition that restricted return to Korea, institutional access, relationship maintenance, and social role performance. Gambling experience appeared as an ambivalent practice: it served as a limited adaptive strategy for maintaining daily life and regulating emotion, while also involving the risks of financial loss and repeated gambling behavior. The participant also understood his present life as a “time of atonement” and reorganized past events and present hardships into a single life story. This study suggests that the lives of later-life migrants should be understood not merely in terms of cultural maladjustment or problematic behavior, but as a life-transition process in which precarious residency, loss, changing relationships, and everyday practices are intertwined. The findings provide implications for psychosocial and multicultural understanding.

본 연구의 목적은 체류 불안정 상황에 놓인 국제 이주 한국 남성의 한 사례를 통해도박 경험이 후기 생애의 생애 진로 재구성 과정에서 어떠한 의미를 갖는지를 탐색하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 남미와 아시아에서의 이동 경험을 거쳐 필리핀에 장기 체류 중인 70대 한국 남성을 대상으로 4회의 심층인터뷰를 실시하고, 질적 생애사 연구를 수행하였다. 자료는 Mandelbaum의 생애사 분석 틀을 중심으로 Super의 생애발달·생애공간 관점과 Savickas의 진로구성 이론을 보조적으로 활용하여 분석하였다. 본 연구에서는 참여자의 경험을 법적 낙인이나 병리적 범주로 단정하지 않기 위해 ‘불법체류’ 대신‘체류 불안정’, ‘도박중독’ 대신 ‘도박 경험’이라는 용어를 사용하였다. 연구결과, 참여자의 삶은 사법적 사건, 장기 체류, 가족 상실, 관계망 축소가 누적되면서 생활세계와 선택지가 점차 좁아지는 방향으로 재구성되고 있었다. 체류 불안정은 귀국과 사회적 역할 수행을 제한하는 핵심 조건으로 작동하였고, 도박 경험은 식사, 시간 구조화, 사회적접촉, 정서 조절을 가능하게 하는 제한적 적응 방식이면서 동시에 경제적 손실과 반복의 위험을 지닌 양면적 경험으로 나타났다. 또한 참여자는 현재의 삶을 ‘속죄의 시간’으로 의미화하며 과거의 사건과 현재의 어려움을 하나의 생애 이야기로 재구성하고 있었다. 본 연구는 후기 생애 이주자의 삶을 문화 적응이나 문제행동의 차원만으로 이해하기보다, 체류 불안정, 상실, 관계 변화, 일상적 실천이 얽힌 생애 전환의 과정으로 이해할 필요가 있음을 시사한다.
