Choe Chiwon (b. 857), a gifted scholar-official and a literary genius of late ninth- and early tenth-century Silla, has continually been remembered and reimagined across time and space, occupying a place in the lives of Koreans as a living cultural hero. This paper explores the process through which the historical figure Choe Chiwon was transformed into a literary and popular hero. In particular, it examines the patterns of his heroization through the anonymously written “Choe Chiwon,” a tale preserved in the Sui jeon (Record of the Miraculous, ca. eleventh century), which may be regarded as one of the earliest extant literary narratives of his life. Focusing on Choe’s eerie love affair with two ghostly women, and the experiences of intimacy and communion this affords the young Choe, the paper argues that the narrative marks a crucial shift, recasting him as an empathetic, passionate, and spiritually potent figure. By engaging irreconcilable physical and epistemological distances between the living and the dead, between China and Silla, and across gender and social boundaries, the narrative constructs a romantic and melancholic version of Choe that departs from his conventional historical persona. This reconfigured image of Choe not only reflects the self-consciousness and self-portraiture of late Silla-early Goryeo intellectuals, but also positions Choe as a mediating figure through whom individuals constrained by the norms and limitations of traditional society could emotionally comprehend and relate to their own realities. Through this discussion, the paper demonstrates that “Choe Chiwon” constituted a crucial turning point in the process by which the historical figure Choe Chiwon was transformed into a hero within the Korean collective imagination.

신라말기의 대표 문인이자 학자인 崔致遠(857~)은 시대와 공간을 초월해 지속적으로 기억되고 재현되며 한국인의 삶 속에 살아 있는 문화적 영웅으로 자리해왔다. 본고는 역사적 실존 인물인 최치원이 문학적, 대중적 영웅으로 변모하는 과정을 탐색하고자 하며, 최치원 문헌설화 가운데 가장 이른 시기의 작품으로 볼 수 있는 《殊異傳》 소재 〈최치원〉을 중심으로 그의 영웅화양상을 고찰한다. 특히 무덤 속 두 여인과의 기이한 연애담에 주목하여, 해당 서사가 젊고 고독한 최치원에게 친밀성과 교감의 경험을 부여함으로써 그를 인간적이고 열정적이며 초월적인 힘을 지닌 존재로 재구성하는 방식을 살펴본다. 또한 산 자와 죽은 자, 중국과 신라, 그리고 성별및 사회적 경계를 가로지르는 물리적, 인식론적 간극이 어떻게 활용되는지를 분석함으로써, 기존 역사적 기록에서 나타나는 단선적이고 정적인 인물상과는 다른 낭만적이고 비애적인 최치원의 형상이 형성됨을 밝힌다. 이처럼 재구성된 최치원의 형상은 나말여초 지식인의 자화상을 담고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 더 나아가 전통 사회의 규범과 제약 속에서 개인의 욕망과 정체성이 억압되던 이들에게 자신의 현실을 정서적으로 이해하고 공감하도록 하는 매개자가 된다. 이러한 논의를 통해 본고는 역사적 인물 최치원이 민족적 상상 속 영웅으로 재구성되는 과정에서 〈최치원〉이 중요한 전환점이 되었음을 밝힌다.
