This study aims to reexamine the historical significance and sense of place of the Hwangtohyeon historic site in Jeongeup and to propose a comprehensive maintenance plan based on this analysis. It begins from the recognition that the existing site, developed in 1980s through shrine-centered monumentalization, has not fully reflected the spirit of the Donghak Peasant Revolution. Accordingly, the study reconceptualizes the battlefield not as a single location on the map but as an experiential landscape encompassing a broader spatial context. Through site analysis, case studies, and a review of existing heritage conservation approaches, an integrated plan is proposed that connects the historic site, memorial park, and surrounding topography. The study suggests a new direction for historic site conservation and demonstrates the potential for creating commemorative spaces that integrate historical authenticity with contemporary use.

본 연구는 정읍 황토현 전적의 역사적 의미와 장소적 가치를 재검토하고, 이를 바탕으로 전적 공간을 재구성하고 현 기념공원과 적극적으로 연계하는 정비계획을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 기존 전적이 사당 중심의 성역화 방식으로 조성되어 동학농민혁명의 정신을 충분히 반영하지 못했다는 문제의식에서 출발하여, 전투 공간을 단일 지점이 아닌 일대의 경험적 경관으로 확장하여 이해하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 현황 분석, 유사 사례 및 사적 정비 방식 검토를 통해 전적지와 기념공원, 주변 지형을 통합하는 계획안을 도출하였다. 본 연구는 전적지 정비의 새로운 방향을 제시하고, 역사적 진정성과 현대적 활용을 결합한 기념공간 조성의 가능성을 제시한다.
